Disparities in long-term breast cancer screening adherence among women with disabilities
Women with disabilities face substantial disparities in breast cancer screening, detection, and treatment, resulting in poorer outcomes. We investigated disparities in 10-year cumulative adherence to biennial breast cancer screening associated with disability status and disability characteristics, including type and severity. This retrospective cohort study used data from the Korean National Cancer Screening Program Data and Korea National Disabi…
Information Landscape on Cervical Cancer
This study examined the information landscape on cervical cancer by employing the extended cancer infodemiology framework and integrated analysis. We analyzed and compared news articles and online platform posts as the two primary sources of health information regarding cancer. Data were collected from BigKinds, a news article database, and blogs and café posts on Naver, which dominates the health information search market in Korea. We analyzed 6…
The association between health literacy and screening for disease-specific complications among community-dwelling adults with diabetes
Introduction: Diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy are examples of complications of uncontrolled diabetes. We hypothesized that health literacy has a defining role in understanding the importance of attending routine screening for diabetes complications. Therefore, our study investigated the relationship between verbal health literacy (VHL) and written health literacy (WHL) and screening for disease-specific complications in individuals with diab…
Socioeconomic inequality in organized and opportunistic screening for gastric cancer
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the socioeconomic inequality in gastric cancer (GC) screening in Korea. Socioeconomic inequality was assessed using both organized and opportunistic screening according to income and educational level. Methods: GC screening data were obtained from the 2009-2022 Korean National Cancer Screening Survey. The final analysis included 47,163 cancer-free men and women. The weighted cancer screening rate was estim…
Understanding of Cervical Screening Adoption among Female University Students Based on the Precaution Adoption Process Model and Health-Belief Model
This study aimed to identify the decisional stages for cervical screening and corresponding cognitive factors in female university students. A cross-sectional study was conducted among Korean female university students aged 20-29 years through an online survey. The main outcome was the decisional stage of cervical screening adoption using the precaution adoption process model. The stages were classified into pre-adoption (the unawareness, unengag…
Alcohol Drinking Pattern and Risk of Head and Neck Cancer
Alcohol consumption is a major risk factor for head and neck cancer (HNC), yet little data exist examining drinking patterns and HNC risk. In this population-based, retrospective cohort study, 11,737,467 subjects were recruited from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. The risks of overall HNC and HNC subtypes according to average alcohol consumption, drinking frequency, and daily amount were examined using Cox proportional haza…
Employment conditions and use of gastric cancer screening services in Korea
We found obvious inequities in the use of preventative health services associated with various employment conditions. Self-employed, irregular, and dispatched workers were significantly less likely to participate in cancer screening than were other workers. Political efforts should be made to reduce employment insecurity and to improve participation in preventative screening services by vulnerable employees so as to resolve the evident health ine…
Associations of perceived risk and cancer worry for colorectal cancer with screening behaviour
We investigated the associations of perceived risk and cancer worry with colorectal cancer screening by the faecal occult blood test, colonoscopy or both. This study was based on the 2013 Korean National Cancer Screening Survey, including 2154 randomly selected, cancer-free and over 50-year-old adults. Individuals with higher cancer worry were 1.53 times more likely to undergo colorectal cancer screening, influenced by emotional reaction; individ…
Increasing uptake of colorectal cancer screening in Korea
This study revealed a substantial increase in up-to-date CRC screening in the general population from 2005 to 2008. However, more than half of adults in Korea are still not up-to-date with their CRC tests. It will be important to continue to investigate factors associated with up-to-date CRC screening by each modality
