On the Foundation Period of the Maronite Tradition
The Maronite Church states that it is an Antiochene and Syriac Church. This article traces, in chronological and discursive fashion, the emergence of the Maronite tradition. It explores the life and significance of St Maroun (d. ca AD 418-23), giving consideration to thinkers who helped to understand his outlook and methods and assessing what we know of the St Maroun monastery (Dayr Mar Maroun) and its vicissitudes down to the sixth century. The …
Did Gurdjieff Write Scripture
Did Gurdjieff write scripture? Can we understand Gurdjieff’s writings in terms of a category he did not use? Conversely, can Gurdjieff’s ideas and practices be used to understand scripture in other traditions? For Gurdjieff, the important lens of scrutiny was not “scripture” but his own categories of “objective art” and “subjective art.” He considered at least some of his writings to be objective art, constructed in accordance with cosmic laws. F…
Gurdjieff Theologos
G. I. Gurdjieff (1877[?]–1949) left a system of integrated ideas and practices which can provide promising fresh perspectives on stubborn theological conundrums, including teachings on God and the devil, angelic orders, creation, the soul, life-after-death, reincarnation and recurrence, free-will and determinism, the proper order of human life, and divine justice. Here I focus on Gurdjieff’s ideas on suffering. Radically reframing the standard po…

Assessing Borrowing
The history of esoteric currents cannot be intrinsically closed to scholarly research and query. Here, we shall examine just one question: that of methodology in examining the sources of esoteric systems. We shall take but one case study: that of Tobias Churton’s recent book-length efforts to “deconstruct” George Ivanovich Gurdjieff and his teaching. Like others before him, he traces diverse aspects of Gurdjieff’s teaching to different sources, v…

The Readiness is All”
The most important of Gurdjieff’s still little-known contemplative techniques was the daily exercise his pupils called the “Preparation.” No notes or recordings of a Preparation given by Gurdjieff himself are known to exist. The chief aim of this article is to publish a transcript of the Preparation as given by George M. Adie (1901–1989), according to indications he had received from Gurdjieff. Other personal pupils of Gurdjieff have attested to …
Biographical Studies of G.I. Gurdjieff
The various published biographies and biographical notices of G.I. Gurdjieff (c.1865-1949) are of diverse style, quantity and content. While some have made considerable contributions to the subject, most attempts have reacted for or against Gurdjieff’s status as what might call an ‘Enlightened Master’. Little biographical writing on Gurdjieff has questioned the scope, reliability and prejudices of the sources. Further, possible resources have bee…
Fasting in Christianity and Gurdjieff
The use of fasting by the Greek-Armenian mystic G.I. Gurdjieff (c. 1866– 1949) has never been studied. Although it was not as important in Gurdjieff’s system as his better known methods (e.g. self-observation and the sacred dances), fasting nonetheless numbered among the techniques he employed for ‘self-remembering’. Over a period of about twenty-five years, Gurdjieff variously stated that fasting could be used for developing the will, altering t…
“The Four Ideals”
Putative Akkadian Origins for the Greek Words Κίναιδος and Πυγή
The purpose of this note is to suggest Semitic, specifically Akkadian, etymologies for two Greek nouns, and thus for words derived from these. The first noun in question is κίναιδος, for a person participating in certain male homosexual acts. The authors suggest that this word is ultimately derived from the Akkadian noun ‘qinnatu’, meaning anus , or more generally, the rear . This noun was productive in Greek, and also passed into Latin as ‘cinae…
Wrestling as a Symbol for Maintaining the Order of Nature in Ancient Mesopotamia
There is found in the ancient art of Mesopotamia an enigmatic bearded hero who appears in several attitudes, but often wrestling wild animals. An analysis of the art demonstrates that this figure is a guardian of the natural order. It is now known that the figure is not Gilgameš, as was once thought, but a ''lahmu'' (singular), and that the lahmū (plural) as a class, are the servants of the god Enki. The material considered here reveals a consist…
