Precarietà e classe. Genitori in occupazioni precarie e ‘lotte quotidiane
This study presents the results of exploratory research on precarity and class. Through key concepts drawn from critical sociology, we try to understand class as class struggle, but not in the political sense of the concept. Here class struggle means the uninterrupted efforts of a whole group of people, within the given circumstances, to create better living conditions. Precarity is part of these circumstances and it is framed within the dynamics…
Precarious parents' in Italy: A study on gendered and racialised labour-power
This research explores the conditions of parents in precarious employment in Italy (European Union) with an emphasis on (but not confined to) mothers from non-European Union countries of origin. The aim is to construct a critical understanding of the material conditions of workers and parents in precarious employment and their everyday struggles to achieve employment and income security, when this income security can be achieved only through the …
The critique of Sociology of Childhood: Human capital as the concrete ‘social construction of childhood’
The ‘New Paradigm’ of Sociology of Childhood famously maintains that childhood is socially constructed and supposedly places a much greater emphasis on the agency of children: children should not simply be framed as the passive receivers of socialisation. The aim of this article is to demonstrate that such a ‘social construction’ of childhood is not concretely articulated and that the theoretical understanding of the ‘social construction’ of chil…
Precarity and family life in Italy and Great Britain. Job insecurity as commodification of labour
This study is based on a critical review of the academic literature around precarious work and family life mainly from the British and Italian contexts. These two contexts were selected as they share important similarities in the way parents in insecure jobs respond and recreate social life in the face of economic marginality, but they also share differences, especially gendered differences. While there is substantial research on job insecurity, …
The Struggle to Reconcile Precarious Work and Parenthood: The Case of Italian 'Precarious Parents
This research is about parents in precarious employment, as the intersection of parental responsibilities and paid work represents a privileged site from which to explore the process of precarisation within a wider social context. Social reproduction is then interrogated in order to conceptually frame parents' everyday struggles for stability. The dyad use-value and exchange-value is mobilised to make sense of parents' activities in the domestic …
Critical theory and the work-family articulation
We are living in an era characterised by the repercussions of recession and austerity, and the fields of work and family are directly affected by historical changes, making the need for reformulating concepts used in the sociology of work and family quite apparent. In order to do so, this article proposes an approach inspired by Open Marxism and critical theory that will assess the contribution of specialised literature in the work-family articul…
Parenting, Play and the Work-Family Interaction
This article explores the recreational time of parents with young children and the ways it can influence practices reconciling work and family. The aim is to examine the internal dynamics and the emotional side of family life vis-à-vis parents' time structures. Children's organised and spontaneous activities have received scant attention in work-family studies and this lack of conceptual development around the quality of time use is unfortunate, …
A great job and a family: Work Narratives and the Work and Family Interaction
This article investigated how work narratives of dual-earner families are materially and symbolically configured in discourses of reconciliation of work and home life. Following critical studies of the work–family interaction, this research takes into consideration symbolic and social structures and tries to look into the interrelation of factors such as job resources, job satisfaction, levels of autonomy with the self-esteem and sense of 'self' …
Symbolic boundaries: Integration and Separation of Work and Family Life
This article explores how working parents make sense of family and work life through an analysis of the boundaries between these two domains of daily life. It then assesses the meaning of these boundaries, how parents mediate 'work' and 'home' according to the symbolic and emotional focus they give to one or both of these domains. The mediating position of parents implies a host of different strategies towards the management of family–work bounda…
Water quality and waterborne disease in the Niger River Inland Delta, Mali: A study of local knowledge and response
Meaning and Structure in the Work and Family Interface
This article explores the work and family life of dual-earner parents, how they manage these commitments and how they respond to competing demands on their daily life. The analysis of qualitative data suggests that parents manage the work-family boundaries according to the specific meaning that they attach to these spheres of daily life, but it also points to employment structures informing parents' 'focus' on work and family and equally shaping …
