Exploring the Mediating Role of Productivity in the Shock-Happiness Relationship in Myanmar
Though the literature has explored the impact of shocks on agriculture, less attention has been given to their effects on farmers’ happiness and the mediating role of productivity. This paper examines the effects of shocks on farmers’ happiness in Myanmar and explores how agricultural productivity mediates this relationship. The study uses nationwide phone survey datasets from Myanmar, provided by the International Food Policy Research Institute,…
Can Weight of Evidence Method Improve Poverty Targeting
This study explores the potential of adapting a WOE (Logit) method, a combination of techniques such as weight of evidence, information value, logit regression, and a score-scaling approach based on doubling the odds, for poverty targeting. To verify the effectiveness and accuracy of this method, the study applies it to develop targeting tools based on international and Vietnamese national poverty lines, and compares their accuracy to commonly us…
Gender gap in rice productivity: Micro-evidence from Myanmar
Gender equality in agriculture is crucial to ensuring food security and economic development. This study provides new empirical evidence of the gender gap in rice productivity from the Ayeyarwady Delta, Myanmar. The Oaxaca–Blinder decomposition reveals that seasonality affects the gender disparity in productivity. Women managers are 7 per cent less productive than men in monsoon paddy production, with 95 per cent of this gap explained by structur…
Crossbred poultry adoption and impact: Evidence from Ethiopia
Growing efforts to achieve improved family poultry signify the importance of adoption and livelihood impact studies of crossbred poultry in Ethiopia. We employ the second panel Ethiopian Socioeconomic Survey (ESS) to study the determinants of crossbred poultry adoption and its significance for household well-being. Results show that female poultry managers, constrained in other productive livelihood options, are more likely to adopt crossbred pou…
Impact of Ethiopia's productive safety net program on household food security and child nutrition: A marginal structural modeling approach
Safety nets are expanding in African countries as a policy instrument to alleviate poverty and food insecurity. Whether safety nets have improved household food security and child diet and nutrition in sub-Saharan Africa has not been well documented. This paper takes the case of Ethiopia's Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP) and provides evidence of the impact of safety nets on household food security and child nutritional outcomes. Prior studie…
The unequal allocation of PRONAF resources: Which factors determine the intensity of the program across Brazil
The family farming sector in Brazil is an important player in the country's economy, especially in poor rural areas., The government has created the National Program for Strengthening Family Agriculture (PRONAF) to stimulate the development of family farming in Brazil. It a credit program that offers loans at a subsidized interest rate. Previous studies have shown that wealthier farmers and more developed regions have more access to subsidized cr…
The Impact of Agricultural Technologies on Poverty and Vulnerability of Smallholders in Ethiopia: A Panel Data Analysis
Many studies evaluating the impact of adoption on welfare focused on adoption of a single technology giving little attention on the complementarity/substitutability among agricultural technologies. Yet, smallholders commonly adopt several complementary technologies at a time and their adoption decision is best characterized by multivariate models. This paper, therefore, examines the impact of multiple complementary technologies adoption on consum…

The Effect of Household Wealth on Fertiliser Use in the Presence of Uncertainty
Previous studies of wealth effect on fertiliser use have produced mixed results on the direction of the impact. Our article looks at this issue from a different perspective by considering the presence of doubts, such as about the true content or general effectiveness of fertiliser. We show theoretically that there could be different responses between the high-wealth and low-wealth farmers. We analyse also the wealth effect empirically using house…

Payments for environmental services – Carbon finance options for smallholders’ agroforestry in Indonesia
Up to 25 percent of all anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions are caused by deforestation, and Indonesia is the third largest greenhouse gas emitter worldwide due to land use change and deforestation. On the island of Sulawesi in the vicinity of the Lore Lindu National Park (LLNP), many smallholders contribute to conversion processes at the forest margin as a result of their agricultural practices. Specifically the area dedicated to cocoa planta…

Do farmers benefit from participating in specialty markets and cooperatives? The case of coffee marketing in Costa Rica 1
Historically low prices in the conventional coffee market have caused financial and social hardship among coffee farmers. In the face of this crisis, specialty markets have attracted the attention of the international donor community. These market segments have shown consistent growth over the last decade and exhibit price premiums in international markets. Therefore, if higher prices are passed on to farmers, access to specialty markets could he…
