    Open Access•Richard Hellie•CHAPTER•The Cambridge history of Russia•2006

This chapter illustrates the evolution of middle Muscovite law. The law tried to support institutions of private property and protect commerce and business. One of the main functions of law was to provide financial support for officialdom and, in a minor way, maintain the army. Finally, like all law everywhere, the Russkaia pravda served as a device for resolving conflicts, regulating compensation for damages, and creating a more humane society-r…

Path dependency is most valuable tool for understanding Russian history since 1480, which coincides with the ending of the "Mongol yoke," Moscow's annexation of northwest Russia, formerly controlled by Novgorod, and the introduction of new method for financing the cavalry-the core of new service class. The cavalry had to hold off formidable adversaries (first Lithuania, then the Crimean Tatars, then the Livonians, the Poles, the Swedes, and the O…

    Richard Hellie•ARTICLE•Russian History•1989

FROM THE EDITOR RICHARD HELLIE (Chicago, U.S.A.) An Historian's Formulation of Gorbachëv's Real Problems Certainly most Americans are in a state of near total bewilderment about what is going on in the USSR under Mikhail Gorbachev. It seems to be totally contradictory, to make no sense at all, that a leading product of the Brezhnev era of dictatorship and stagnation should try to move away from a heritage which would be the envy of most dictators…

    Richard Hellie•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•1973

My book, Enserfment and Military Change in Muscovy, deals with the problem of the interaction between technological and social change. While it is obvious that the major issues (enserfment, changing military styles) of Enserfment and Military Change in Musco…
