Open Access•Melanie Poudevigne, Christina Day et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2021

The aims of this study were to investigate the feasibility of an experiential learning initiative led by minority exercise science undergraduates and to observe the adaptations after a 10-week high-intensity functional training (HIFT) program in 34 underrepresented, hypertensive, and overweight/obese professional firefighters (PFF; age: 36.8 ± 11.0 years, body weight: 97.3 ± 21.5 kg, height: 181.7 ± 6.6 cm; BMI: 29.2 ± 4.9 kg/m2). • Studying the impact of three different instructional methods on preservice teachers’ decision-making

Yasemin Demiraslan Cevik, Thomas Andre•ARTICLE•Research Papers in Education•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 60

This study compared the impact of three types of instructional methods (case-based learning, worked example and faded worked example) on preservice teachers' (n = 72) decision-making about classroom management. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to investigate both the outcomes and the processes of preservice teachers' decision-making performance. The results revealed that the worked example group, compared to the case-based learning and fa…

  • Athletic Participation and the Social Status of Adolescent Males and Females

    Open Access•Alyce Holland, Thomas Andre•ARTICLE•Youth & Society•1994•Cited by: 19•References: 16

This study examined the role of athletic participation in the social system of adolescent males and females. Social status was measured by criteria for remembrance after high school, type of sport participant preferred for a date or friend, and self-esteem. The sample consisted of 422 high school and 319 college students. There were significant differences between and among males and females on all three social status measures. Participants who w…

  • Aids Knowledge and Sexual Responsibility

    Open Access•Lynda L Lamport, Thomas Andre•ARTICLE•Youth & Society•1993•References: 12

A sample of 221 midwestern high school and college adolescents completed the AIDS Knowledge Test and Sexual Responsibility Scale. Overall, students had a moderate to high level of AIDS knowledge. Females had greater knowledge of AIDS than males. Adolescents who had not engaged in sexual intercourse had greater AIDS knowledge than did adolescents who had engaged in sexual intercourse. Sexually active college students scored higher on the AIDS Know…

  • Participation in Extracurricular Activities in Secondary School

Open Access•Alyce Holland, Thomas Andre•ARTICLE•Review of Educational Research•1987

The paper reviews literature relating to extracurricular participation and adolescent development. Five areas are described: personal-social characteristics, academic achievement, educational aspirations and attainments, participants’ roles in activities, and environmental social context. A methodological critique and directions for future research are provided. Participation correlated with higher levels of self-esteem, improved race relations, …

  • Group Discussion and Individual Creativity

Thomas Andre, Thierry André et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1979•References: 1

The effects of prior group discussion on individual creativity were examined in two experiments using male and female undergraduates. In Experiment 1, Ss (N = 179) who responded after group discussion produced more responses, but the overall group divergent production was reduced. Ss seemed to be copying each other's responses, but the group discussion led to a lower total number of different responses being produced by the group than by a compar…

  • Forgetting of Prose as a Function of Verbatim or Paraphrased Test Items

Thomas Andre•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1976

In two experiments, men and women college students were tested for retention of an original passage following study of either an interfering or a neutral passage. Ss were tested with both verbatim and paraphrased versions of the original passage stimuli. In Experiment 1 (N = 116) retroactive inhibition was found for the verbatim, but not for the paraphrased test items. The failure to find retroactive inhibition on the paraphrased items was attrib…

  • Item-Specific Interference and List Discrimination in Free Recall

Thomas Andre, Thierry André et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1976

In two retroactive inhibition experiments (N = 112, N = 72, respectively) using the free-recall paradigm, memorized two successive lists of nouns and completed a retention test in which they recalled either the first or both lists. Ss who during learning trials used the same retrieval strategy on the first and second lists remembered less of the first list than Ss who used different strategies on both lists. Ss who recalled both lists on the rete…

  • The Priority in Recall of New Items Effect

Thomas Andre, Thierry André•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1975•References: 2

In five experiments, a proposed strategy model of the priority in recall of new items (PRNI) effect was compared with the artifact hypothesis. The strategy model holds that the effect is produced by the selective maintenance of new items in short term memory, while the artifact hypothesis holds that the migration of new items to the recency area produces the effect. Experiments 1, 2, and 3 supported a strategy explanation, but raised questions ab…

  • Clustering in the Free Recall of Sentences

    Open Access•Thomas Andre, Thierry André•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1973

Ss in 2 experiments recalled 12 sentences in either the active or passive voice and containing or not containing an adjective modifying the categorizable noun. Both free recall and clustering increased over trials. Sentences not containing an adjective were recalled more frequently than sentences containing an adjective but clustering was not affected by the presence or absence of adjectives. Sentence voice did not affect recall or clustering. Fo…

  • Retroactive Inhibition of Prose and Change in Physical or Organizational Context

    Thomas Andre•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1973

Changes in the physical concext between original learning (OL) and interpolated learning (IL) reduce the amount of retroactive inhibition (RI) wich low meaningful materials (Strand, 1970; Watts & Royer, 1969). Jensen (1972) reported a similar effect wich meaningful prose passages. The present study investigated the effect of changing physical or organizational context on R1 in prose. Each of four groups of Ss read an OL passage about a primitive …

  • Category Clustering in the Free Recall of Sentences

Open Access•Thomas Andre, Thierry André et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1971

2 groups of Ss free-recalled a list of active or passive voice sentences. The “actee” nouns in the sentences were classified into 3 categories. Ss reliably clustered their recall by conceptual category and clustering increased over 5 trials. No significant group differences were obtained on either organization or total recall. On a posttest of organization, 76.9% of the passive Ss and 60% of the active Ss organized the sentences into E-provided c…
