Ingroup-Outgroup Trust
Social scientists have long recognized the role that trust plays in shaping the course of intergroup relations. However, little attention has been afforded to explicating the foundations of trust in intergroup contexts. A primary aim of the present chapter is to review and assess the scholarly literature on trust as it pertains to, and might inform our understanding of, how intergroup relations manifest themselves. In particular, this chapter foc…
Intergroup Relations
Within organizational theory, the term intergroup relations refers to individual interactions involving members from different groups, as well as the collective behavior of groups in interaction with other groups at either the intra‐ or inter‐organizational level. The study of intergroup relations has focused on both the antecedents of cooperation and conflict between groups, as well as identifying the consequences of intergroup relations on orga…

Repairing and Enhancing Trust: Approaches to Reducing Organizational Trust Deficits
Organizational scholars have long touted the myriad benefits of trust for organizational functioning and performance. Recent surveys, however, document pervasive deficits in such trust. This article addresses the important topic of reducing these deficits. Our attack on this problem is two pronged. First, we examine approaches to repairing damaged trust within organizational settings. Specifically, we assess the state of organizational theory and…
Organizational Trust: A Cultural Perspective
The globalized nature of modern organizations presents new and intimidating challenges for effective relationship building. Organizations and their employees are increasingly being asked to manage unfamiliar relationships with unfamiliar parties. These relationships not only involve working across different national cultures, but also dealing with different organizational cultures, different professional cultures and even different internal const…

Patients' Race, Ethnicity, Language, and Trust in a Physician
We examine whether racial/ethnic/language-based variation in measured levels of patients' trust in a physician depends on the survey items used to measure that trust. Survey items include: (1) a direct measure of patients' trust that the doctor will put the patient's medical needs above all other considerations, and (2) three indirect measures of trust asking about expectations for specific physician behaviors, including referring to a specialist…

Trust and Distrust in Organizations: Emerging Perspectives, Enduring Questions
Scholarly interest in the study of trust and distrust in organizations has grown dramatically over the past five years. This interest has been fueled, at least in part, by accumulating evidence that trust has a number of important benefits for organizations and their members. A primary aim of this review is to assess the state of this rapidly growing literature. The review examines recent progress in conceptualizing trust and distrust in organiza…
Paranoid Cognition in Social Systems: Thinking and Acting in the Shadow of Doubt
Distrust and suspicion are common and recurring problems at all levels of social organization, ranging from the interpersonal to the collective. Unfortunately, our understanding of the origins and dynamics of such distrust and suspicion remains far from complete. A primary aim of this research, accordingly, was to articulate a new framework for conceptualizing a form of exaggerated distrust and suspicion termed paranoid social cognition. Drawing …

The Social Context of Negotiation: Effects of Social Identity and Interpersonal Accountability on Negotiator Decision Making
The present research investigated the effects of social identification and interpersonal accountability on negotiator judgment and decision making. Using arguments derived from social identity theory, the authors hypothesized that salience of a common or shared social identity will heighten negotiators' concern about the other party's outcomes, resulting in a preference for greater equality. Extrapolating from recent research on the effects of ac…
When in Doubt: Cooperation in a Noisy Prisoner's Dilemma
In the last decade, there has been a resurgence of interest in problems of cooperation, stimulated largely by Axelrod's work. Using an innovative tournament approach, Axelrod found that a simple strategy, tit-for-tat (TFT), was most successful in playing the repeated prisoner's dilemma (PD) in a noiseless environment. However, recent analytical work has shown that monitoring problems caused by noise significantly impair TFT's effectiveness. The p…
How much is enough? Psychological components of "guns versus butter" decisions in a security dilemma
The present research investigates the role of cognitive processes in decisions regarding how much to spend on security in a laboratory simulation of an international security dilemma. Implications of these results for understanding real-world defense spending are discussed
