  • Toward a broader understanding of split alliances in family therapy

    Open Access•Valentin Escudero, Myrna L Friedlander et al.•ARTICLE•Family Process•2022

To broaden our understanding of a split alliance in family therapy, we investigated the frequencies and correlates of sessions in which therapists, youth, and caregivers reported markedly different perceptions of the alliance. The sample consisted of 156 Spanish families who received Alliance Empowerment Family Therapy (Escudero, Adolescentes y familias en conflicto, 2013) for child maltreatment. Family members and therapists rated the alliance o…

  • The Synergistic but Troubled Relationship Between Psychotherapy Science and Practice

    Open Access•Charles J Gelso, Clara E Hill et al.•ARTICLE•The Counseling Psychologist•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 44

How to foster the integration of science (especially empirical research) and practice has been a vexing problem since the beginnings of counseling psychology and other applied fields. We propose that the basis for this problem is the very different, even contradictory, demands of empirical research and practice, and the resulting ways of being research scientists and practitioners. Focusing on psychotherapy, we posit seven such demands/pulls and …

  • Helping Skills, Working Alliance, and Session Depth in China

    Open Access•Xu Li, Dennis M Kivlighan et al.•ARTICLE•The Counseling Psychologist•2018•References: 39

After every session, clients completed measures assessing trainees’ use of helping skills, working alliance, and session depth. Results of a multilevel analysis indicated that: (a) between-trainee and between-client exploration skill use was related to better working alliance reported by the client, and between-session exploration …

  • Therapist Expertise in Psychotherapy Revisited

    Open Access•Clara E Hill, Sharon B Spiegel et al.•ARTICLE•The Counseling Psychologist•2017•Cited by: 12•References: 151

The thesis of this article is that the lack of evidence related to the identification and development of therapist expertise is due to the inadequate definition and operationalization of the concept. We propose a definition of expertise that is restricted to performance in the conduct of psychotherapy: the manifestation of the highest levels of ability, skill, professional competence, and effectiveness. In addition, we offer several criteria that…

  • Therapist Expertise

    Open Access•Clara E Hill, Mary Ann Hoffman et al.•ARTICLE•The Counseling Psychologist•2017•References: 15

In this rejoinder, we respond to comments raised by Goodyear, Wampold, Tracey, and Lichtenberg; Norcross and Karpiak; Reese; and O’Shaughnessy, Du, and Davis about the definition of expertise and methods for increasing expertise. The most consensus among these authors was found for client outcomes as a criterion of expertise and practice as a mechanism for increasing expertise. Until we have better empirical evidence, however, we suggest keeping …
