A Community and Labor Exchange Case Study
Mesearch, Research, and Qualitative Reasoning
In all research and all methods, reflexivity and the researcher's awareness of the environment being studied are both valuable and profound. Qualitative research incorporates a standard of reflexivity, recognizing that the researcher is an instrument who cannot be hidden, ignored, or treated as a disembodied third person. This article serves as a specific invitation to reflexivity. The aim is to cultivate a healthier approach to knowledge product…
Higher Education Resisting Settler Colonial Transfer in Palestinian Bethlehem
This article analyzes the perceptions and actions of Palestinian faculty and administrators at colleges and universities in Palestinian Bethlehem. We explore the meaning of higher educational practices and structures under settler colonial conditions of gradual dispossession of ancestral land. The physical conditions and policies of occupation and settler colonialism create a hostile epistemological environment for Palestinian people and bodies o…
Global White Supremacy: Anti-Blackness and the University as Colonizer
Knowledge is more expansive than the boundaries of the Western university model and its claim to be the dominant—or only—rigorous house of knowledge. In the former colonies of Europe (e.g., South Africa, Brazil, and Oceania), the curriculum, statues, architectures, and other aspects of the university demonstrate the way in which it is a fixture in empire maintenance. The trajectory of global White supremacy is deeply historical and contemporary—i…
The Transition to Fatherhood, Contextual Stress, and Substance Abuse: A Prospective Analysis of Rural, Emerging Adult Black American Men
Background: Among Black American emerging adult men (∼aged 18–25), the early transition to fatherhood is often marred by numerous contextual stressors related to racial discrimination and socioeconomic instability. The strain of transitioning to fatherhood while experiencing high levels of contextual stress may evidence escalations in substance misuse over time as men may turn to substances to cope with the stress of complex life transitions. How…
The Theater of Qualitative Research: The Role of the Researcher/Actor
If the world is a stage and life is a collection of scenes, there may be a great set of discoveries to make if a researcher thinks of society like an actor. The art of analysis and human understanding may too often be under the influence of scientific approaches to method. By applying methods of theater to that of qualitative research, we explore a set of concepts to identify the interplay between the interviewer as character and researcher as ac…
Asian American women in STEM in the lab with “White Men Named John”
Asian American women occupy a paradoxical space within the context of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, simultaneously overrepresented as Asian Americans and underrepresented as women. For Asian American female doctoral students, the complex layering and weaving of these intersections involves the constant negotiation of science, racial, and gendered identities. This study explored how the intersections of science, race, a…
Individual and institutional factors that contribute to student learning among Latina and Latino undergraduate students
This study examined student learning via the composite measure of intellectual abilities among 1,210 Latina/o undergraduates at 4-year institutions. Longitudinal pre and post surveys were used to examine the impact of interrelated variables on Latina/o’ senior year cognitive gains. This study applied Becker’s (1993) human capital theory and Astin’s (2012) Input-Environment-Output model to organize and analyze the data. Through structural equation…
The Central Role of Theory in Qualitative Research
The use of theory in science is an ongoing debate in the production of knowledge. Related to qualitative research methods, a variety of approaches have been set forth in the literature using the terms conceptual framework, theoretical framework, paradigm, and epistemology. While these approaches are helpful in their own context, we summarize and distill them in order to build upon the case that a balanced and centered use of the theoretical frame…
The value of higher education for individuals and society in the Asia-Pacific region
Central to this study is an exploration of the degree to which higher education is perceived as an individual and/or a collective value. Seminal literature supports the notion that colleges and universities are Western institutions. Throughout the Asia Pacific, higher education is expanding in a hybrid form in collectivist societies. This qualitative phenomenological study was guided by two questions: How is economic value shaped by cultural valu…
University Land-Grant Extension and Resistance to Inclusive Epistemologies
Public land-grant universities have historically engaged with the public through knowledge extension in the agricultural sciences, which later grew into other forms of outreach. Given the important mission of land-grant institutions to positively impact agricultural sciences, this inquiry focuses on the role of agricultural extension and the exchange of Indigenous knowledge through university programs. In a case study of a Native-serving institut…
College student racial and ethnic stereotype-based humor as a cultural domain
This study explored college student perceptions of racial and ethnic stereotype-based humor in Hawai’i where humor is salient to the local culture. It has been suggested elsewhere that perceptions may be understood through eliciting a cultural domain or mental category including a set of items that are perceived to belong in the same category. For the present study, 72 students participated in interviews or focus groups to explore characterizatio…
Emotional Intelligence and the Qualitative Researcher
In this conceptual article, we explore the idea of refining the role of the researcher. Using emotional intelligence as a framework, we synthesize methodological writing about the role of the researcher and ways to enhance the connection between humans in qualitative research. Emotional intelligence can strengthen the ability to connect with participants, skillfully listen during the interview process, and more clearly understand the lifeworlds p…
Retracted Article: A higher education learning profile in the Asia-Pacific
The purpose of this article is to expand knowledge beyond quality and assessment practices in the Asia-Pacific region to develop a profile about the nature of learning domains and degree qualifications. Using a policy research and analysis framework, data were collected from 16 of the 21 APEC economies about higher education systems and learning outcomes. This article evaluates the learning outcomes used throughout the region for a focus on workf…
