  • Martin Buber

    Joachim Israel•BOOK•Martin Buber•1995

  • Epistemology and Sociology of Knowledge

    Open Access•Joachim Israel•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•1990•References: 1

The relationship between epistemology and the sociology of knowledge is discussed. It is asserted that epistemology is logically basic to the sociology of knowledge. Epistemology in turn has to be founded in the analysis of the nonformalized logic inherent in everyday language. The relationship between epistemology and the sociology of knowledge is discussed and exemplified, first, by an analysis of the concept of false consciousness. If discusse…

  • Social Responsivity as Elementary Human Action

    Open Access•Joachim Israel•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1988•References: 3

The problem of social responsivity as formulated in a new book by Johan Asplund is discussed. Asplund assumes that social responsivity is an elemen tary form of social life implied in social-psychological theories A socially responsive person comes alive in the presence of others, but. when isolated, his lite is without purpose. The concept is illustrated using a number of example, and well-known social-psychological experiments are reinter prete…

  • Cultural Relativism and the Logic of Language

    Open Access•Joachim Israel•ARTICLE•Diogenes•1981•References: 4

    A. L. Kroeber, who together with C. Kluckhohn wrote a now classical review of the concept of culture (1958), claimed that the most significant accomplishment of anthropology in the first half of the twentieth century was the extension and clarification of the concept of culture. In the book mentioned they analyzed about 300 different definitions of the concept. In a critical review of Kroeber's and Kluckhohn's book their colleague L. A. White con…

It is argued that during 44 years of Social Democratic government in Sweden an intimate co-operation developed between the government and large (multinational) corporations. This co-oporation was based upon the development of common interests; the result of an economic policy of structural rationalization and state intervention. A strong tendency of concentration of capital occurred. Figures are presented to support the theses developed

  • From Level of Aspiration to Cognitive Dissonance, or, What the Middle Class Worries About

    Open Access•Joachim Israel•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1977•References: 13

Social psychological theory has to a large extent been the psycho logy of the 'social' and not the sociological explaination of psycho logical phenomena and processes. In this article we attempt an analysis of the societal conditions seen as the neglected context of social psychological theories ranging from level of aspiration to cognitive dissonance. Three reasons for the choice of these theories are given (1) the author's own research in the f…

  • The Welfare State - a Manifestation of Late Capitalism

    Open Access•Joachim Israel•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1974•References: 6

An attempt is made for a conceptualization of the functioning of the welfare-state as known in Scandinavia. A central thesis is that the state-apparatus has a certain degree of freedom to initiate actions within the constraints of a capitalistic economic system. This thesis rejects the idea of the state being neutral and independent as well as the idea of the total subordination of the state-apparatus under capitalist domination. Nor is the thesi…

  • Is a Non-Normative Social Science Possible

    Open Access•Joachim Israel•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1972•Cited by: 4•References: 4

A distinction is made between the notion of a value-free social science and a normative social science. It is argued that all social sciences start with normative notions stipulations about the nature of man, about society and the relation between man and society. It is argued that stipulations mostly are technical norms. In this respect they differ from equivalent common-sense notions which are postulated to be rules of the social game of acquir…

  • The Principle of Methodological Individualism and Marxian Epistemology

    Open Access•Joachim Israel•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1971•Cited by: 3•References: 2

In the following article I am going to defend the thesis, which at first may appear to be strange, that, in order to base sociology (and knowledge) on Marxian epistemology one has to accept on an ontological level the position of methodological individualism, and on a metatheoretical level a position of non-reductionism 1. In order to support my thesis I have to explicate briefly: 1) Marx's basic epistomological position. 2) the principle of meth…

  • Consumption Society, Sex Roles and Sexual Behavior

    Open Access•Joachim Israel, Rosmari Eliasson•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1971

Sexual norms and behavior are analyzed within a sociological context. A relationship between the need for capital accumulation and a puritan moral is postulated. Sex roles and sexual behavior in the consumption society are analyzed and it is stressed that the emphasis on need-satisfaction is also applied to sexuality. A permissive attitude towards sex, made possible by easy access to contraceptives, is considered typical of the consumption societ…

    Open Access•Joachim Israel•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1970•Cited by: 2

As an introduction the scientific status of Marxism is discussed and the Marxian thesis concerning the discrepancy between productive forces and relations of production is interpreted as a cultural lag hypothesis. The discussion of class- theory is based upon a contextual analysis of the way Marx and Mao-Tse-Tung used the class-concept. It is shown that Marx uses several concepts. Finally a two-dimensional class-model is developed, where power an…

The Theoretical Point of Departure In a previous paper the concept was discussed and elaixrated.1) The concept can most easily be explained by reference to G. H. Mead and in analogy to his concept of the other.2) The generalized other can be interpreted as a non-specific norm-sender. An individual can experience expectations directed towards him without being able to identify a specific norm sender. Instead, he may experience that people in gener…
