The Theoretical Point of Departure In a previous paper the concept was discussed and elaixrated.1) The concept can most easily be explained by reference to G. H. Mead and in analogy to his concept of the other.2) The generalized other can be interpreted as a non-specific norm-sender. An individual can experience expectations directed towards him without being able to identify a specific norm sender. Instead, he may experience that people in general expect him to do certain things.3) A generalized role then comprises all those role-expectations which an individual perceives as directed towards himself as a member of a certain group or as an occupant of a certain position within a social structure, but which do not correspond to factual role-expectations within this given situation. However, they can be traced as belonging to other roles
