  • Obituary: Roger Boulay (1943—2024)

    Open Access•C Kaufmann•ARTICLE•Pacific Arts•2024

Roger Boulay (1943–2024) devoted the majority of his professional life to building an inventory of Kanak material culture from New Caledonia. In 1979, Jean-Marie Tjibaou had passed the idea for this project on to Boulay, who immediately set to work in New Caledonia and in European museums. In 1982, he became a part-time curator at the National Museum of the Arts of Africa and Oceania in Paris, and began reorganizing that museum collection and its…

  • Impaired Antisaccades in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Evidence From Meta-Analysis and a Large Empirical Study

Open Access•Katharina Bey, Leonhard Lennertz et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2018

Increasing evidence indicates that patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) exhibit alterations in fronto-striatal circuitry. Performance deficits in the antisaccade task would support this model, but results from previous small-scale studies have been inconclusive as either increased error rates, prolonged antisaccade latencies, both or neither have been reported in OCD patients. In order to address this issue, we investigated antisacca…

  • The materiality of Sepik societies: Introduction

Open Access•C Kaufmann, Philippe Peltier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal de la Société des…•2018•References: 2

From the time of its discovery at the end of the 19th century, the northern Sepik Valley was recognized as one of those places with a seemingly inexhaustible capacity for artistic creation. The cultures found along the river and its tributaries produced objects and architectures that astonished by the impressive diversity of their forms. This creativity has motivated numerous studies with no end in sight so rich is the material, as attested by th…

  • Conclusion

  • Conclusion

Open Access•C Kaufmann, Philippe Peltier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal de la Société des…•2018

At the end of our exploratory mission, let us take a moment to look back and ask ourselves a few questions: How did the themes of the three symposiums dealing with anthropological research in the Sepik area evolve? And how did the materiality of artworks as well as the creativity of artists, in short, the subject of art, become intrinsically linked with the more general approach comparing cultural entities or phenomena across the region? And last…

  • Does the materiality of museum collections matter in Digital Humanities

    Open Access•C Kaufmann•ARTICLE•Journal de la Société des…•2018•References: 1

After more than one hundred years of increasingly self-reflective collecting, museums and archives around the globe hold an immense corpus of physical objects and relevant archival material from the Sepik area of Papua New Guinea. While culturally coded knowledge is embodied in these materials, the use of additional outside observations may help to describe some of these areas of knowledge. To keep traditional knowledge alive, methodologies beyon…

  • The mother and her ancestral face. A commentary on Iatmul iconography

    Open Access•C Kaufmann•ARTICLE•Journal de la Société des…•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Visually effective symbolization in Iatmul society is reviewed, starting from observations by Bernard Juillerat on the role of the mother in real as well as in symbolic relationships. Ceremonial acts of women and men in the context of naven rituals, and iconological representation anchored in initiatory knowledge are shown to be linked. Performing renders knowledge, services, material objects such as valuables or masks, i.e. cultural entities wit…

  • Reflections on art, crafts, and ethnographic documentation in a Papua New Guinea society

    C Kaufmann•ARTICLE•Visual Anthropology•1988

A number of difficulties need to be overcome when attempting to film in societies where simple craftsmanship, modes of expression, artistic and religious ideas, as well as traditions, blend together in an indivisible whole. The author explains his effort to satisfy the theme of the film both visually and analytically. He goes on to give an account of how problems were confronted step‐by‐step, keeping in view past field experience and the complex …
