A number of difficulties need to be overcome when attempting to film in societies where simple craftsmanship, modes of expression, artistic and religious ideas, as well as traditions, blend together in an indivisible whole. The author explains his effort to satisfy the theme of the film both visually and analytically. He goes on to give an account of how problems were confronted step‐by‐step, keeping in view past field experience and the complex details of the subject matter. The author's experience in the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea as well as with the Institute for the Scientific Film in Göttingen, led him to make a plea for greater collaboration between ethnologists and film professionals, particularly in fieldwork. He recommends a viewing of the film to be followed by a discussion with those who were filmed
