  • Customer satisfaction scores

    Open Access•John Fry, Andrew Brint•ARTICLE•Tourism Management•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In this paper we develop new models for the distribution of customer satisfaction scores. This leads to new approaches for estimating the number of fake reviews in empirical data. Modifications of the basic model are presented that account for the propensity of extreme positive and negative reviews, and a potential lack of engagement on the part of reviewers. Further work to incorporate price and cultural effects is proposed

  • Estimating the public health impact had tobacco-free nicotine pouches been introduced into the US in 2000

Open Access•Peter Lee, Peter N Lee et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Although such model-based estimates involve uncertainties, the results suggest that introducing ZYN could substantially reduce product-related deaths

  • Using data on snus use in Sweden to compare different modelling approaches to estimate the population health impact of introducing a smoke-free tobacco product

Open Access•Smilja Djurdjevic, Laszlo Pecze et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Approach 1 is unreliable, accounting inadequately for non-tobacco factors affecting mortality. Approaches 2 and 3 provide reasonably similar approximate estimates of the mortality increase had snus not been available, but have differing advantages and disadvantages. Only Approach 3 considers tobacco history, but develops histories using tobacco transition probabilities, which is possibly less reliable than using estimated tobacco prevalences at e…

  • Life in the Travelling Circus’

    John Fry, J R Fry et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 17

This article examines the effects of globalization on the well-being of migrant professional athletes. Interviews with 20 touring professional golfers reveal that players experience many of the personal problems—such as loneliness, isolation, low decision latitude, low social support, and effort-reward imbalance—which have been identified as “strong predictors of mental ill-health” (Leka & Jain, 2010, p. 65). Feelings of loneliness and isolation …

This paper examines the relationship among male touring professional golfers from a figurational sociological standpoint. The paper is based on 20 interviews from players with experience playing at various levels on the European Professional Golfers Association professional tours and a level 'above' that. The results indicate a workplace culture where many begin to adopt the attitudes and behaviors that encourage the development of networks of te…

  • Explosive bubbles in the US–China exchange rate? Evidence from right-tailed unit root tests

Ghassen El Montasser, John Fry et al.•ARTICLE•China Economic Journal•2016•References: 7

In this article we apply novel right-tailed unit root (sup Augmented Dickey-Fuller (SADF) and generalized sup ADF) tests to the China–US exchange rate. The empirical results document that the recent financial crisis in 2008 may be preceded by early warning signs of exuberance. Using the SADF test, evidence of an explosive behavior in the nominal exchange is found from 2005 onwards. This period coincides with both financial reforms in China and ea…

Drawing on figurational sociology, this article examines issues of money that are central to touring professional golfers' workplace experiences. Based on interviews with 16 professionals, results indicate the monetary rewards available for top golfers continues to increase; however, such recompense is available to relatively small numbers and the majority fare poorly. Results suggest that playing on tour with other like-minded golfers fosters in…

    John Fry•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1963

The changing patterns of medical care have brought the relationship between the GP and the hospital under anxious review. With the forces of medical progress and advance gathering ever-increasing momentum and leading to more and more specialisation and super-specialisation the useful, or useless, functions of the GP are being questioned. One of the most pertinent of these questions is how does the GP fit into any pattern of medical care where the…
