The changing patterns of medical care have brought the relationship between the GP and the hospital under anxious review. With the forces of medical progress and advance gathering ever-increasing momentum and leading to more and more specialisation and super-specialisation the useful, or useless, functions of the GP are being questioned. One of the most pertinent of these questions is how does the GP fit into any pattern of medical care where the most important role is to be played by the hospital? A discussion of the relations between the GP and the hospital, from the point of view of a GP, will provide a means of reviewing the present and taking a look into the future
