Afinal, Qual É O Papel Da Escola?
The Critical Ear
The “critical ear” is a concept crossing ideas of “technical listening” and “ear cleaning”. It was first presented as a workshop (Synth Library Prague, July 2024) dedicated to listening in its manifolds and complexities. It discussed our sonic environment and the several contexts in which listening takes place. Based on exercises that train frequency recognition, for example, how can we recognise that content in our mundane soundscape? In that se…
Jovens E Ação Climática
The article results from the development of a climate education project with high school students from 3 public schools in Portugal. Participatory methodologies were used to involve young people in identifying local climate problems and developing collective climate actions with their communities. The article aims to discuss the importance of these spaces in schools, so that young people can develop participation skills, debating climate solution…
Teachers’ perspectives on determinants of educational (under)achievement of Cigano/Roma students in Portugal
Foley gesture
The research project "Acousmatic Foley" addresses common traits between foley art and Concrete Music, based on the idea that the foley artist is an acousmatic listener and, in turn, that acousmatic listening is a form of fiction. In this line, the study argues that both fields have similar treatment of the "sonorous object". For this purpose, the research builds on two lines of thought: the "son-en-scène" and the "mise-en-son". Firstly, the "son-…
In-between identities and hope in the future
Increasing numbers of Cigano people in Portuguese schools show that this is the most educated generation to date. However, according to recent data only 2.6% are enrolled in secondary education. Using an intersectional approach examining gender, ethnicity, and family socioeconomic status to explore the youngsters’ academic trajectories, and focusing on tensions of the interplay between structural constraints and individual agency, enables us to e…
How Did the Covid-19 Pandemic and Digital Divide Impact Ciganos/Roma School Pathways
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the Portuguese government to declare various lockdowns between 2020 and 2022. The first State of Emergency was enforced in March 2020, in which face-to-face classroom teaching was repeatedly interrupted. At that time, families were expected to provide the necessary supplies for digital learning, with some support from the government, municipalities, civil society, and local institutions. Nevertheless, many families al…
Reflections on Sound Associations and Sonic Digital Environments
This essay uses a “thought experiment” in order to combine theories of perception with sound practices. For that, it explores the concept of “object of thought” and the process of brain-associations in relation to acousmatic composition and reduced listening. Throughout the hypothetical premise of a falling tree, the study brings to discussion digital environments, in particular in relation to methodologies behind game engines. Eventually, it pro…
Field Recordings
The article focuses on the political implications of field recording (FR) in relation to sound ecology, education, art, and technology. On the one hand, it discusses how FR can protect us as a social tool in a paradoxical relationship between FR as an artistic practice and social networks that motivate alienation. On the other hand, it addresses the difference between what we perceive as sonic properties used for aesthetic purposes and what neura…
