  • Expectations, Status Value, and Group Structure

    Open Access•Stuart J Hysom, Murray Webster et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 40

We report a replication and extension of theory and experimental tests reported by Stuart J. Hysom. That earlier work added status value of rewards to established theories of status generalization processes. We extend that work to cases in which both the status positions of actors and the status value of their rewards function in status generalization. Overall experimental results show confirmation of the theory, but fine-grained analyses reveal …

  • Situational determinants of reward allocation: The equity-equality equilibrium model

    Open Access•Stuart J Hysom, M Hamit Fisek•ARTICLE•Social Science Research•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 40

  • Status Valued Goal Objects and Performance Expectations

    Stuart J Hysom, J Hysom•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2009•Cited by: 11

I designed an experiment to test predictions, derived from expectation states theories, that the unequal allocation of social rewards among collective task-focused actors will affect the actors' rates of power and prestige behavior. Past research shows that allocations of exchangeable resources can have these effects. The prediction, however, is general and applies to groups where distributed rewards possess only status value. Consistent with pre…

  • Status characteristics and reward expectations: A test of a theory of justice in two cultures

    Open Access•M Hamit Fisek, Stuart J Hysom•ARTICLE•Social Science Research•2008•Cited by: 7•References: 36

  • Leadership Structures in Same-Sex Task Groups

    Open Access•Stuart J Hysom, Cathryn Johnson•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 21

This article investigates contradictory findings reported in the literature concerning differences in leadership differentiation between same-sex groups. Drawing on arguments developed by Walker et al. (1996) addressing measurement validity in this literature, and on an extension in the status literature developed by Ridgeway (1988) and Fennell et al. (1978), this article develops and tests three predictions. Specifically, the authors predict gre…

  • Creating Status Characteristics

    Murray Webster, Stuart J Hysom•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1998•Cited by: 69•References: 5

Status characteristics constitute significant elements of small group and societal stratification systems, and understanding their creation has theoretical and practical importance. The authors generalize Cecilia L. Ridgeway's pathbreaking theory of status construction in three stages. First, they show that a conceptual change, using goal objects instead of exchangeable resources, permits to explain the creation of many more status characteristic…
