Youth, Social Media, and Mental Health: Evidence from Australian Panel Data
Social media use has become ubiquitous among young people, yet evidence on its association with mental health remains limited and mixed. In this study, we use rich longitudinal data from Australia and measure social media use based on the frequency of active posting or sharing on social networking sites. We find that heavy social media use and addiction are associated with increased psychological distress, with the association concentrated among …
Saving for Retirement: An Intrahousehold Perspective
Many countries’ policies are shifting the responsibility for funding retirement onto individual savings. But many individuals live in mixed-sex households where, given typically gender-unequal life-time earnings, opportunities to accumulate savings are also unequal. Thus, a gendered perspective on saving for retirement is needed. This article uses Australian individual and household data to examine conceptual and measurement issues in understandi…
Extreme drought and sexual violence against adolescent girls and young women: A multi-country population-based study
Droughts have profound and far-reaching impacts on human health and well-being, but their influence on sexual violence among adolescent girls in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is underexamined. This study examines the association between drought and sexual violence against adolescent girls and young women globally, using cross-sectional, nationally representative data from the Violence Against Children and Youth Surveys (VACS) from 2013 …
Regulation of domestic violence: A global perspective
The presence and types of DV laws matter significantly for IPV prevalence. Comprehensive legal frameworks are vital in effectively mitigating DV
Attractiveness and preferences for redistribution in non-Western countries
This paper examines the link between physical attractiveness and individual support for income redistribution in a non-Western context. Using nationally representative survey data from the South Caucasus, we find that more attractive individuals are less supportive of redistribution, consistent with findings from Western settings. However, the negative correlation is only present among women. This gender pattern contrasts with previous studies, w…
Product of our environment? Place effects on Body Mass Index
An under-explored aspect of body weight is the role that location plays in its determination. To address this evidence gap, this study uses a dynamic event study framework to examine how weight changes for people who change their location and, by extension, how much of the overall variation in weight can be explained by place-based versus individual factors. We then undertake a decomposition analysis on movers and non-movers to evaluate the role …

Diffusion of Policy to Address Violence Against Women: Implementation Evidence from Indonesia
Many countries globally have adopted national policy commitments to address violence against women (VAW). Yet the implementation of these policies largely relies on subnational governments’ actions. Why do some but not all subnational governments adopt policies to implement VAW response services? Surprisingly, few studies have addressed this question. Drawing on norm diffusion and gender policy reform theories, we assess the factors driving the a…
Pro-environmental behavior and subjective well-being: Culture has a role to play
Parenthood and the distribution of intra-household inequalities in wellbeing
While there is a large body of literature on the effects of parenthood on wellbeing, an intra-household perspective has, thus far, been limited. This is an important research gap given that the experience of raising children is typically associated with interdependencies between mothers and fathers. Taking an intra-household approach, this study generates new insights into the complex puzzle of the impacts of parenthood on wellbeing drawing on lo…
The Role of Conflict in Sex Discrimination: The Case of Missing Girls
Conflicts between ethnic groups can threaten group survival and exacerbate son preference in conformity with the traditional role of men as group defenders. We study the impact of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region on the subnational variation of sex ratios among children in Armenia that has one of the world’s highest sex ratios at birth. Difference-in-differences analysis shows that communities closer to the conflic…
Identity and support for policies towards Indigenous people: Evidence from Australia
This paper adds to knowledge on the role of politicians' and voters' identities in influencing policy-making in societies marked by ethnic inequality. The outcome we investigate is the initiatives and policies targeting Indigenous populations in the context of Australia. We ask whether and how politicians' and voters' identities, defined based on a range of their observable characteristics, shape initiation and support of Indigenous-focused polic…
Exposure to conflict and child health outcomes: Evidence from a large multi-country study
Empirical estimates show that even after controlling for a large array of socio-economic and demographic characteristics and location fixed effects, conflict exposure is negatively associated with child nutrition and immunization, across all our measures of conflict. These findings are robust across a range of specifications, alternative measures of conflict and sub-samples
Conflicts and son preference: Micro-level evidence from 58 countries
Heaven can wait: Future tense and religiosity
Gender and climate change: Do female parliamentarians make difference?
Do employers reward physical attractiveness in transition countries
Constitutions and the Political Agency of Women: A Cross-Country Study
The underrepresentation of women in parliaments worldwide warrants attention to discern underlying sources. This study examines one potential source: the countries' constitutions. Based on a large cross-country dataset from 2011, the study demonstrates that women's representation in parliament is larger in countries with constitutional protection from gender-based discrimination. Baseline estimates suggest that the presence of such protection res…
