  • From causal theory to policy metrics: A mixed-methods approach to measuring the quality of citizen participation

Open Access•Guberney Muñetón-Santa, Carlos Andrés Pérez Aguirre et al.•ARTICLE•SN Social Sciences•2026

Effective measurement of citizen participation is crucial for promoting democratic governance, yet traditional approaches often fail to capture its complex, context-specific, and causal dynamics. This paper presents a novel mixed-methods approach that integrates Directed Acyclic Graphs with the Alkire-Foster methodology. The proposed approach uses qualitative insights, obtained through expert workshops and the construction of directed acyclic gra…

  • Mapping Poverty and Well-Being Through Natural Language Processing

Open Access•Guberney Muñetón-Santa, Carlos Andrés Pérez Aguirre et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Estudios Sociales•2025

Poverty and well-being indexes encompass dimensions that capture meaningful aspects of life worth measuring. These dimensions reflect people’s concerns and priorities, offering insight into their lived experiences. This study identifies dimensions of poverty and well-being directly from people’s everyday language and proposes a novel method for assigning weights to these dimensions based on what people express as important. Using topic modeling …

This study examines poverty identification in Colombia by comparing the multidimensional poverty index and the social program beneficiary identification system. The results are analyzed in Colombia and the City of Medellín using measures of agreement and a contingency table. A statistical learning model is employed to estimate the classification of the social program beneficiary identification system, achieving a balanced accuracy of 78%. Qualita…

  • Predicting Multidimensional Poverty with Machine Learning Algorithms: An Open Data Source Approach Using Spatial Data

    Open Access•Guberney Muñetón-Santa, Luis Carlos Manrique-Ruiz•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 40

This paper presents a methodology to estimate the multidimensional poverty index using spatial data at the street block level. The data used in this study were obtained from Open Street Maps and ESA's land use cover, which are freely available sources of spatial information. The study employs five machine-learning algorithms, including Catboost, Lightboost, and Random Forest, to estimate the multidimensional poverty index with spatial granularity…

  • An exploratory assessment of the relationship between multidimensional poverty and armed conflict: The case of Antioquia, Colombia

    Open Access•Osmar Leandro Loaiza Quintero, Guberney Muñetón-Santa et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Desarrollo y Sociedad•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 6

This paper analyses the relationship between poverty and armed conflict in Antioquia, Colombia. The poverty analysis it uses is framed according to Sen’s capability approach, which constitutes the conceptual basis for the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) subsequently developed by Alkire and Foster. The MPI is measured employing data from the government database SISBEN, which is used by the Colombian authorities to identify beneficiaries of so…
