  • Investigating the Provenance and Manufacturing Technology of Medieval Mace Heads from Poland

    Open Access•Arkadiusz Michalak, Ewelina Miśta-Jakubowska et al.•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2026

A mace is a butt weapon that is composed of a metal head that is mounted on a wooden haft. The paper deals with the origins of medieval mace heads that were discovered in Polish lands; these have been a subject of debate since they were first discovered there. In previous research, only form and decoration were used to determine the provenance of these artefacts. A technological analysis (ED-XRF, SEM) and provenance analysis of the raw material u…

  • Lost and Found. The Residence of Nostitz Family in Chotków, Lower Silesia

    Open Access•Arkadiusz Michalak, Andrzej Legendziewicz•ARTICLE•Acta Universitatis Lodziensis…•2025•References: 2

The archaeological research conducted in Chotków, Lower Silesia focused on verifying the existence and character of a presumed defensive-residential site associated with the von Nostitz family. Archival studies indicate that from the 14th to the 16th centuries, Chotków hosted multiple stone residential towers with defensive features, though their precise locations had remained unverified until recently. Remote sensing and geophysical surveys, com…

  • Wind from the South? Mace head from Surowica in the light of formal and metallurgical analysis

    Open Access•Arkadiusz Michalak, Piotr Kotowicz et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2024•References: 3

A mace head with a socket was incidentally discovered in 2020 in the locality of Surowica in the Podkarpackien Voivodeship. On the basis of analogies, it can be dated to the 14th century. These analogies also indicated that the artefact was in all probability manufactured in the territory of the Kingdom of Hungary. Metallurgical analyses demonstrated that the mace head was cast of copper with natural admixtures by using the lost wax method. Regre…

  • Castrum Lubenov: Calamity of the Tower Castle in Lubrza

    Open Access•Arkadiusz Michalak•ARTICLE•Fasciculi Archaeologiae Historicae•2022

Due to illegal construction works in 2016, the late medieval motte-and-bailey castle in Lubrza was significantly damaged. The immediately undertaken rescue excavations paradoxically led to better understanding of the complex based on the obtained archaeological evidence as well as written sources, architectural studies, and remote sensing data. Detailed analysis of the artefacts has made it possible to establish the basic occupations of the inhab…

Arkadiusz Michalak•ARTICLE•In Gremium. Studies in History,…•2020

Shield surfaces have been decorated since ancient times. The motif often repeated in their decorations were images of evil eyes, monsters, mythical animals (signa horribilia). Depiction from the shield increased apotropeically, the protective properties of the shield. A popular face motif also appearing on the shields at that time was also the emblem of the lions, or figures with stylized animal ears, evoking an association with the figure of a m…

  • Terra incognita? Nie tylko o wytwórstwie broni na pograniczu Śląska, Wielkopolski, Brandenburgii i Łużyc w późnym średniowieczu

    Open Access•Arkadiusz Michalak•ARTICLE•Kwartalnik Historii Kultury…•2020•Cited by: 1

During the Middle Ages arms and armour were considered luxury products. They were not used every day and not by everyone. Nonetheless, the circle of their buyers was relatively wide, making their prices extremely diversified. On the other hand, as weaponry was bought every several years, the demand was limited. It resulted in a relatively small number of workshops in which weapons were produced. Besides specialised production sites located in tow…

According to the person submitting it, it was found about 5-6 years earlier in the northern part of Kostrzyn nad Odrą. The main decorative motif of the openwork field is a heraldically arranged bird. The closest analogies to the chape in question are dated to the second half of the 10th and 11th century. Artefacts of this type could have been produ…

Open Access•Arkadiusz Michalak, Leszek Gardeła•ARTICLE•Slavia Antiqua Rocznik poświęcony…•1970

This paper focuses on a copper-alloy goad discovered in 2017 in Lubniewice in Lubuskie Voivodeship, Poland. An interdisciplinary analysis has shown that the goad was originally part ofa lavishly decorated copper-alloy spur representing a type known from high-status West Slavic graves (e.g. Lutomiersk, Ciepłe) and settlement sites. Because objects of this kind are made of costly material, and because expert skills were required to produce them, it…
