In Search of Improved Rural Livelihoods in Semi-Arid Regions through Local Management of Natural Resources: Lessons from Case Studies in Zimbabwe
Social Federalism: The Constitutional Position of Nonprofit Corporations in Nineteenth-Century America
The importance of voluntary associations is apparent to all who study the development of American society in the nineteenth century. Observations made by the perceptive nineteenth-century traveler Alexis de Tocqueville have become an obligatory cliché in historical writing on the subject: Americans of all ages, all conditions, and all dispositions constantly form associations. They have not only commercial and manufacturing companies,... but asso…
Racist or Racial Voting in the 1981 Atlanta Municipal Elections
Some recent municipal elections have been interpreted as indicating that America's cities are becoming more polarized on the dimension of race. It has been hypothesized that the results observed in Atlanta in 1981 and Chicago in 1983 presage an era of voting along racial lines. This article advances an alternative hypothesis: Voters who support candidates of their own race often do so simply because they have no particular reason not to. Specific…

A Theoretical Approach to Peer Influence in Adolescent Socialization
This paper examines the contribution of the adolescent peer group to political socialization, as measured by a survey of high school seniors, their parents, and their peers. A number of expectations emerge from Festinger's theory of group influence regarding the strength of the association between a respondent's attitudes and those of his peers. Three political and three racial attitudes are investigated. The results show that peer influence is g…
Patterns of Change in the Partisan Loyalties of Native Southerners: 1952- 1972
Change in the Southern Electorate
This paper presents an analysis which measures the extent to which each of five sources of change in the party loyalties of the Southern electorate has been active during the periods 1952-1960 and 1960-1972. The measure of party loyalty is Converse's normal vote, with a set of updated parameters for the 1960-1972 period provided by Arthur H. Miller. The basic data sources are the six SRC presidential election studies ranging from 1952 to 1972, su…

On the Prospects of Polarization in the French Electorate
Three great schisms in political culture of France have assured fragmentation of electoral competition for better part of this century. One of these is Catholic-anti-Catholic, which has generally divided Right from Left. Second is proconstitutional-anticonstitutional, which has separated extremes from Center. Most recently, Communist-anti-Communist split has set far I,eft apart from everyone else. In years following World War II, cross-cutting na…

The Future of the Gaullist Majority: An Analysis of French Electoral Politics
The theoretical contribution of this paper involves a reformulation and a generalization of the view of voting behavior originally expounded in The Voter Decides. The basic variable of party identification has been expanded to include any belief which constitutes a standing commitment to vote in a certain way. Hence, differences across political cultures which involve the basic belief systems about partisan competition may be recognized and taken…
