Social Work and the Popular Psychotherapies
Professional Achievement in Social Work
The authors report on a study of the professional achievements of 719 recently graduated California MSWs. Respondents are assigned an achievement score which is an index based on responses to seven questions. The scores of low achievers and high achievers are compared to analyze associations with: validating factors (e.g., salary), personal factors (race and gender), and pre-MSW factors (e.g., undergraduate education)
Social Support, Social Networks, Social Exchange, and Social Work Practice
Three interrelated "theories" are presented: social support, social networks, and social exchange, and their utility for social work practice is assessed. Frequently, the terminology of these theories is used in social work to replace well-established terms, while the real utility of the theories is overlooked. Managing Professional Interpersonal Interactions
The author presents a theoretical framework for understanding the interpersonal interactions social workers have in their professional capacity. The major elements of the framework are a typology of others with whom professionals interact, the qualities of interpersonal interactions, the professional's needs, and the resources exchanged. Implications of the framework for the development of knowledge about practice are discussed
