  • Dispositional Associates of Gce Performance in Sixth Form and Further Education College Students

    Open Access•Megan Clarke, M J CLARKE et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1987

S ummary . A great deal of research effort has sought to identify factors associated with successful academic performance. The more consistent findings suggest generally that intellectual ability and previous examination performance are the strongest determinants of attainment, whilst within the dispositional domain of personality, extraversion and emotional stability claim some importance, albeit that findings in the latter area have been surpri…

  • Further Validation of the Behaviour in School Inventory

Open Access•M B Youngman, Michael Youngman et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1985

S ummary . Youngman's (1979) Behaviour in School Inventory is used as part of a counselling and guidance programme in an Australian secondary school. The sample comprises the complete year 7 intake (12‐ to 13‐year‐olds) of 96 boys and 37 girls. The results demonstrate good convergent and discriminant validity with correlations in the range 0.42 to 0.63 with the objective behavioural adjustment criterion, times sent out of class. It is argued that…

  • Toward a Typology of Lecturing Styles

Open Access•Gretchen A Brown, Mali Bakhtar et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1984•Cited by: 1

This paper describes some recent findings on style of lecturing derived from a study of 258 lecturers in two English universities. Factor analysis yielded six scales for identifying approaches to lecturing. Subsequent cluster analysis yielded five distinctive types of lecturers' styles. The styles were associated significantly with subject area, marginally with status but not with years of experience

  • Intrinsic Roles of Secondary School Teachers

    Open Access•M B Youngman, Michael Youngman•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1983

S ummary . In a study whose prime objective was to develop a self‐report job description instrument for secondary school teachers it was also possible to use the descriptions obtained to define actual teaching roles. The following report opens with an extended discussion of the principles underlying the design and analysis of this study of teachers' roles, emphasising the naturalistic stance adopted. It then presents the results of a centroid rel…

  • Some Determinants of Early Secondary School Performance

    Open Access•M B Youngman, Michael Youngman•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1980

S ummary . This paper reports further analyses of a study of primary/secondary transfer for which certain findings have already been published (Youngman and Lunzer, 1977; Youngman, 1978; Youngman, 1979). Here the concern is to examine the various pupil characteristics that might determine subsequent academic performance in secondary school. It employs covariance regression models rather than the more customary stepwise or complete models and cons…

  • Assessing Behavioural Adjustment to School

    Open Access•M B Youngman, Michael Youngman•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1979

S ummary . The development of a 34‐item self‐report measure of behavioural adjustment to school is described in detail. Analysis identified three distinct scales—studiousness, compliance and teacher contact. All three scales and the total score are shown to have acceptable reliability and well‐defined construct validity within a normal lower secondary school population. Various applications of the instrument, including the use of a teacher form, …

  • Six Reactions to School Transfer

    Open Access•M B Youngman, Michael Youngman•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1978•Cited by: 2

S ummary . TWO samples representing rural (N = 390) and city (N =454) children were tested before and after transferring to secondary school in an attempt to determine the nature of individual reactions to school transfer. Measures used included ability, achievement, attitude to school, and personality. Cluster analysis applied independently to these two samples identified six subgroups showing different patterns of adjustment. Two of these react…

  • Personality and Behaviour in School

    Open Access•S N BENNETT, M B Youngman et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1973

S ummary . The responses of first and second year secondary pupils on the JEPI and a Behaviour in School Inventory were cluster analysed. Four clusters emerged which were internally homogeneous and stable over time. These are described and related to ability, achievement and motivation measures. It is postulated that two dimensions underlie the cluster pattern—adjustment and compliance. This is interpreted in terms of previous research. The meani…
