Category norms of verbal items in 56 categories A replication and extension of the Connecticut category norms.
Clustering and priority of free recall of newly learned items in children
Further Evidence that Strongest Free-Recalled Items are not Recalled First
Order of free recall of items given correctly for the first time on the same trial did not show a monotonic relationship to subsequent recall, which was better for first and last than intermediate initial recall positions. These results corroborate and extend Battig, Allen, and Jensen's (1965) demonstration that previously incorrect items tend to be given earlier in free recall than previously correct items
Classification Learning of Items Grouped on the Basis of Degree of Prior Learning
Contrary to expectation, no facilitation of classification (CI) learning was produced if all four items (common 4-letter words) to be associated with the same number response were presented the same number of times during a prior free-recall learning task (FL), as compared with an ungrouped condition where each such item was presented a different number of times during FL. Both were superior to a control condition given FL with Easy (1-digit) num…
Associative Asymmetry in S-R vs R-S Recall of Double-Function Lists
Contrary to the Asch-Ebenholtz principle of associative symmetry, significantly poorer backward (R–S) than forward (S–R) recall was demonstrated following the learning of double-function paired-associate lists, wherein each item appears once as a stimulus and again as a response term but is paired with two different other terms. Since equal availability of stimulus and response terms is guaranteed by the formal identity of the two sets within the…
Constant vs Varied Serial Order in Paired-Associate Learning
Typical varied serial-order conditions of paired-associate (PA) learning were compared with a constant serial order on all trials in 5 experiments involving systematic variations in method, kind of material, and other potentially relevant factors. The results showed a small but relatively consistent facilitation by constant serial order limited primarily to later stages of learning. Since a shift following the first correct response to each pair …

Comparison of Two Methods of Scaling Nonsense-Syllable Pairs for Ease of Learning
Comparison of Two Methods of Scaling Nonsense-Syllable Pairs for Ease of Learning
Current research in verbal behavior has been retarded by a shortage of calibrated verbal materials of a sufficient variety and quantity. An increasing recognition of this need has led several recent investigators to attempt to provide such material. Some of these have involved no more than the reevaluation ' of previously calibrated material (Archer, 1960; Trapp & Kausler, 1959). However, most workers have introduced either new types of material …
