    Changes in lifetime earnings potential for men by occupation and socio-economic group are reported for data from the New Earnings Survey.     Using personnel data from a large financial company, we find some evidence that women have to meet more stringent criteria than men for promotion, but that much of the difference between men and women's attainment is due to their attributes.     The two-year Youth Training Scheme (YTS) is assessed by comparing the earnings of individuals who have had seven different types of training. Earnings are predicted from a model that allows for systematic selection of individuals into each training regime and differences between regimes.
