  • What do immigrants make of immigration policies? Insights from interviews with Venezuelans in Chile

    Open Access•Cristián Doña-Reveco, Lourdes Gouveia•ARTICLE•International Migration•2021•Cited by: 11•References: 7

In this article, we build on qualitative data from 37 in‐depth interviews with Venezuelan immigrants in Chile, collected in 2017 and 2018, to explore how they make sense of sudden immigration policy changes made by the Sebastián Piñera government in mid‐2018. Linked to these perceptions, we explore our interviewees’ attitudes towards other immigrant groups. We contend that, while immigrant participation in policymaking often is a normatively desi…

  • The Research-Policy Gap on Latino Immigrant Issues: Impacts and New Directions on Social Policy: A Conclusion

    Open Access•Lourdes Gouveia•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 18

In this final and concluding article, I focus on three broad and interwoven themes that cut across various articles in this issue. While these themes partially overlap with those highlighted in the introduction, it is their insinuation into policy discourses and actual formulations that informs their selection. These policy-oriented themes are language, immigrant integration, and the defiance of common sense; racialization, identity formation and…

    Open Access•Lourdes Gouveia, Arunas Juska•ARTICLE•Sociologia Ruralis•2002•Cited by: 25•References: 7

In this article we examine corporate and state actions implicated in manufacturing the extension, and precipitating the collapse, of the fictional distance separating production from consumption in contemporary agro-food systems. We investigate this phenomena via the case of the U.S. beef industry. Specifically, we examine regulatory initiatives and corporate responses aimed at addressing the two most important issues confronting the industry tod…

  • Negotiating Bacteriological Meat Contamination Standards in the US: The Case of E.coli O157:H7

Open Access•Arunas Juska, Lourdes Gouveia et al.•ARTICLE•Sociologia Ruralis•2000•Cited by: 9

The paper analyzes changes in bacteriological meat contamination standards in the us since the early 1980s when E.coli O157:H7 was for the first time identified as a new foodborne pathogen associated with the consumption of undercooked meat. Four types of risks, and the standards associated with them, are identified. Up until 1982 meat contamination was ascertained via organoleptic standards. Meat was considered as safe as producers' and/or consu…

  • Talk Is Cheap: The Value of Language in the World Economy-Illustrations from the United States and Quebec

    Open Access•Lourdes Gouveia, Mark O Rousseau•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 16

Global economic restructuring modifies the traditional material value of language skills and stands to increasingly fragment labor along class and ethnic lines. Language deskilling, brought about by the international mobility of capital and technological change, has diminished the value of traditionally skilled labor. Yet labor, though weakened economically and politically, is not powerless. Two contrasting instances, examined through a common po…
