  • What is the Community Going to Get from It?” Abolitionist Ethics and the Praxis of Responding to Reciprocal Community Requests

Stephen Danley, Kathryn Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•Public Integrity•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 26

In this article, we highlight an underdiscussed element of field work: reciprocal community requests—requests from community to engage beyond conducting ethical research and to support a community’s own work. We draw from our own fieldwork in New Orleans, LA, Camden, NJ, and Philadelphia, PA, to make these requests visible and discuss their importance. We find that these reciprocal requests extend far beyond consideration of rigorous research or …

  • Boiling the Frog Slowly: Reducing Resistance to Neoliberal Education Reform Through Window Dressing Strategies

    Open Access•Julia Sass Rubin, Stephen Danley•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Review•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 35

Increasingly partisan perceptions of neoliberal education reforms and resistance to such reforms from communities they negatively impact have created challenges for some neoliberal reformers. This article uses a case study of the state takeover and dramatic reshaping of the Camden, New Jersey school district to examine how some reformers have responded to those challenges. We find that Camden's state-appointed superintendents used multiple messag…

  • Participation Shopping in Environmental Justice: Advocates Compete to Capture Legitimacy from the “Black Lives Matter” Movement

Open Access•Stephen Danley, Kathryn Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Justice•2021

Little existing research addresses the impact of the increasing popularity of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement on environmental justice (EJ) organizing. Critical Environmental Justice is embracing racial justice frameworks. However, there is little understanding of what that means on the ground. Using ethnographic data from a case study of a struggle over a proposed microgrid in Camden, New Jersey, we identify two key emergent findings on th…

  • What enables communities to resist neoliberal education reforms? Lessons from Newark and Camden, New Jersey

Stephen Danley, Julia Sass Rubin•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Affairs•2019•Cited by: 7•References: 9

Neoliberal education reformers advance a set of strategies intended to improve public education by incorporating market-based approaches. To facilitate the adoption of these often unpopular ideas, neoliberal reformers advocate for governance mechanisms that make it more challenging for communities to control their public schools. The prevalence of such undemocratic governance mechanisms has grown over the last decade, undercutting communities’ ef…

  • They’re Not Building It for Us”: Displacement Pressure, Unwelcomeness, and Protesting Neighborhood Investment

    Open Access•Stephen Danley, Rasheda L Weaver•ARTICLE•Societies•2018•Cited by: 11•References: 9

In some of Camden, NJ’s most underdeveloped neighborhoods, new investment is perceived as a catch-22. Such investment is badly needed, but residents fear gentrification and the creation of white spaces. Our study examines that puzzle, that residents protest badly needed investment, using ethnographic and interview data from residents and Camden, NJ, as a case study for examining community understanding of gentrification. In doing so, we draw upon…

  • An activist in the field: Social media, ethnography, and community

    Stephen Danley•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Affairs•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 14

This article examines the undertheorized intersection of ethnography and social media use by researchers by drawing upon my ethnographic research in Camden, New Jersey, on community activism and my social media presence in the same community. I argue that blogging and social media are intersecting methodologically with techniques such as keeping field notes that document observation. In doing so, social media holds great potential to further the …

  • Pragmatic Urban Protest: How Oppression Leads to Parochial Resistance

    Open Access•Stephen Danley•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Protests struggle to gain traction in societies that are either too open (undermining the need for protest) or too closed (suppressing the possibility of protest). In the United States, there has been a sharp counter-movement responding to the election of President Donald Trump and conservative shift in ideology toward nativism. Given this shift and movement, an inquiry into the possibility of protest is both timely and critical. This ethnographi…

  • Creative Coercion in Post-Katrina New Orleans: A Neighborhood Strategy to Address Conflict in Networks

    Open Access•Stephen Danley•ARTICLE•Cosmopolitan Civil Societies An…•2015

The study of relationships within networks has traditionally focused on concepts such as cooperation, collaboration and other forms of partnership (Brown & Keast 2003). The assumption has been that actors in a network have shared vision and are working together. This study tests that idea by using mixed methods and ethnography to examine 15 neighborhood associations in post-Katrina New Orleans, and 71 of their relationships within policy networks…
