Fighting for Women's Rights in Illinois
A NUMBER OF WOMEN OF THE REVOLUTIONARY generation understood the bold Enlightenment assertion of the Declaration of Independence that “all men are created equal” to be gender-neutral. However, it would take concerted action on the part of many Illinois women to make this a reality in the state. The fight still continues. In 1818, when Illinois achieved statehood, women's legal status was still classified by the pre-Revolutionary concept of feme co…
Decolonizing the English Literary Curriculum
George Floyd's death on May 25th 2020 marked a watershed in reactions to anti-Black racism in the United States and elsewhere. Intense demonstrations around the world followed. The gilded cage
In the Australian context, Tasmania has long epitomised the Utopian/dystopian dilemma of the island within both the Australian imaginary and boreal projections of the antipodes more generally. To read the island sequence played out in Christine Anu&s;s Olympic performance in view of the formulation, each island/monad retains its regional specificity while comprehending the world. The tropism that interconnects miniaturisation, islands and utopian…

Reading the Planetary Archipelago of the Torres Strait
This essay makes use of the Western concept of the archipelago as a starting point for an examination of island to island relations in the Torres Strait, Australia, as they are rehearsed in the imaginary domain of story, in both its written and oral modes. The essay deploys Spivak’s notions of planetarity and Bloch’s concept of utopianism as ways of charting the relationship between two Torres Strait stories, one old, one new. In so doing, the es…
Networked Family
This article uses several wills written between 1893 and 1924 by ex-slaves living on Pemba Island (one of the Zanzibar Islands off the coast of East Africa) to explore the familial relationships among slaves and ex-slaves, as well as with their former owners. It argues that the construction of familial relationships is far more complex than blood and marital kinship ties alone. From former slave owners using their current slaves to claim relation…
Nurses' Experiences of Grieving When There Is a Perinatal Death
Many nurses grieve when patients die; however, nurses' grief is not often acknowledged or discussed. Also, little attention is given to preparing nurses for this experience in schools of nursing and in orientations to health care organizations. The purpose of this research was to explore obstetrical and neonatal nurses' experiences of grieving when caring for families who experience loss after perinatal death. A visual arts-informed research meth…
Envisioning the archipelago
Certain limitations arise from the persistent consideration of two common relations of islands in the humanities and social sciences: land and sea, and island and continent/mainland. What remains largely absent or silent are ways of being, knowing and doing—ontologies, epistemologies and methods—that illuminate island spaces as inter-related, mutually constituted and co-constructed: as island and island. Therefore, this paper seeks to map out and…

Australia, the Island Continent
This article argues that Australia reimagined its geopolitical identity in the mid-20th century by recollocating the two terms of its unique, contradictory status as an island continent. Whereas colonial Australia had stressed the continental element of this descriptor, the middle years of the 20th century witnessed a shift in self-perception that laid stress on Australia as an island. This article identifies a wide, interconnected range of reaso…

What Parish Are You From? A Chicago Irish Community and Race Relations
For Irish Americans as well as for Chicago’s other ethnic groups, the local parish once formed the nucleus of daily life. Focusing on the parish of St. Sabina’s in the southwest Chicago neighborhood of Auburn-Gresham, Eileen McMahon takes a penetrating look at the response of Catholic ethnics to life in twentieth-century America. She reveals the role the parish church played in achieving a cohesive and vital ethnic neighborhood and shows how ethn…
