  • The Federal Unionists Network Resists Trump

    Eric Blanc•ARTICLE•Labor Studies in Working-Class…•2026

Labor organizers have a saying: “The boss is the best organizer.” While employer attacks don’t always or even normally lead to working-class resistance, it is certainly the case that Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s authoritarian wrecking-ball operation against public services and American democracy was the major spur toward federal workers’ organizing in early 2025.The broader stakes of this struggle were perhaps best captured by a chant federal act…

  • Labor Desperately Needs a New Strategy

    Open Access•Eric Blanc•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2025

The American political landscape could potentially have been transformed had unions made an all—in investment in new organizing after 2020. Instead, routinism prevailed. Despite a remarkable opening for mass unionization—driven by the pandemic, a tight labor market, Biden's pro—labor NLRB, deepening youth radicalization, and grassroots momentum from Starbucks and Amazon drives—funding for new organizing remained at historic lows, even with labor'…

  • Worker-led Unionization Sweeps the US

    Open Access•Eric Blanc•ARTICLE•International Labor and…•2024

Over the last half-decade, worker-led struggles have spread across US cafes, warehouses, universities, media outlets, and beyond. Reviving the bottom-up spirit that enabled unions to make their big breakthrough in the 1930s, recent worker-to-worker initiatives have shown how this can be done in our sprawled out, economically decentralized conditions. Building off the best traditions of left trade unionism, and leaning on the novel affordances of …

  • From a drought to HIV

    Open Access•Carole Treibich, E J Bell et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2022

Each year there are over 300 natural disasters globally with millions of victims that cost economic losses near USD$100 billion. In the context of climate change, an emerging literature linking extreme weather events to HIV infections suggests that efforts to control the HIV epidemic could be under threat. We used Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data collected during the 2015-2016 harsh drought that affected several areas of Malawi to provide…

  • How Digitized Strategy Impacts Movement Outcomes

    Open Access•Eric Blanc•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2022•Cited by: 8

Explaining digital impacts on social movements requires moving beyond technological determinism by addressing two underdeveloped questions: How does political strategy shape the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs)? And how do divergent uses of ICTs influence movement outcomes? This study addresses these questions by examining the 2018 educator walkouts in Oklahoma and Arizona-statewide actions initiated through rank-and-file …

Based on archival research in eight languages, Revolutionary Social Democracy is the first comparative account of the numerous socialist parties that fought for democracy and workers' power across the entire span of the Russian E…

    Open Access•Eric Blanc•ARTICLE•Praktyka Teoretyczna•2021

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Praktyka Teoretyczna journal, we have invited our long-lasting collaborators and comrades to reflect once again on the concept of the common and it’s possible futures by posing the following questions: a) what is the most important aspect of the current struggles for the common?; b) what are the biggest challenges for the commonist politics of the future?; and c) where in the ongoing struggles do you see a pot…

  • Breaking the Law

    Open Access•Eric Blanc•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 4

A comparative analysis of the early 2018 statewide educators’ strikes in West Virginia, Arizona, and Oklahoma illustrates the viability of a relatively neglected prescription for revitalizing organized labor: illegal strike action. Whereas the West Virginia and Arizona walkouts successfully ignored legal prohibitions on striking and won major concessions from the state, Oklahoma’s action was less successful in part because it remained on the terr…

  • The climatic determinants of cotton yields

Eric Blanc, Elodie Blanc et al.•PREPRINT•2018

We conduct a multiple regression analysis of the main climatic determinants of rain fed cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) yields for an experimental plot located in Mali, West Africa. The use of daily climatic data allows us to explicitly examine the role of cumulative precipitation, the length of the rainy season, the number of dry spells, the flooding periods, temperature, and solar radiation in determining annual cotton production, and the result…

Bringing together leading observers of the 2018 teachers’ strikes in the United States, this forum surveys the origins, character, and trajectory of the rebellion as a whole. We examine the relations between union bureaucracies and the rank and file, the wider political context of the United States, the geography of the strike, immediate and longer-term grievances in the public-education sector, spontaneity and organisation, local cultural contex…

  • The Rosa Luxemburg Myth

    Eric Blanc•ARTICLE•Historical Materialism•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This article challenges widespread uncritical portrayals of Rosa Luxemburg. By examining the politics and practices of Luxemburg and her SDKPiL party in Poland, I show that their commitment to proletarian emancipation was undermined by sectarian and doctrinaire tendencies that contributed to the defeat of Poland’s workers’ revolutions in 1905 and 1918–19. A critical analysis of their approaches to the national question, the Polish Socialist Party…

Changes in agricultural land use have important implications for environmental services. Previous studies of agricultural land-use futures have been published indicating large uncertainty due to different model assumptions and methodologies. In this article we present a first comprehensive comparison of global agro-economic models that have harmonized drivers of population, GDP, and biophysical yields. The comparison allows us to ask two research…
