Rebuilding social relationships in contexts of refuge: Spiritual kinship among Congolese in Kampala (Uganda)
Healing and the Spiritual Dimension in Hospital Patient Care in Italy
This article is based on a research project carried out in 2019 and 2022 in two hospitals in Turin, Italy (hospitals: Le Molinette and Cottolengo). The project aimed to understand the tools available to caregivers to recognize and address the spiritual needs of patients in the hospital setting. The authors conducted multiple semi-structured interviews and focus groups with nurses working in the two hospitals. It was found that religious and spiri…

Providing Spiritual Care to In-Hospital Patients During Covid-19: A Preliminary European Fact-Finding Study
Historically, there has be a close relationship between the nursing services and spiritual care provision to patients, arising due to the evolvement of many hospitals and nursing programmes from faith-based institutions and religious order nursing. With increasing secularism, these relationships are less entwined. Nonetheless, as nurses typically encounter patients at critical life events, such as receiving bad news or dying, nurses frequently un…
Purity rules in Pentecostal Uganda: Towards an analysis of relational rulework
Rules concerning romantic relationships and sex-what we term 'purity rules'-are central to Pentecostalism in Uganda. In public church arenas, the born-again variant of the rules laid down during Uganda's 'ABC' response to HIV/AIDS - 'abstain till marriage and be faithful once you marry'-are presented as clear and non-negotiable. Yet in church members' lives, and in their conversations with each other or in small church groups, space is often crea…
Introduction to the special issue: Beyond Self-Fashioning and Freedom-Bending, Breaking, and Adhering to Rules in Religious Contexts
Rules are a crucial part of much religious thought and practice. Their importance or insignificance, their strictness or laxness, and their rigidity or flexibility in the face of change are constant themes of debate, both within and outside religious communities. Yet they have arguably not been given the attention they deserve within recent anthropology. Since the rise of practice theory, rules have more often been considered something to look pa…
We Make the Voice of These People Heard: Trajectories of Socioeconomic Mobility among Congolese Pastors in Kampala, Uganda
This article focuses on religious entrepreneurship in a context of displacement, specifically among Congolese refugees in Kampala, where becoming a pastor is one of the few opportunities available for social mobility. I analyze the social trajectories of two Congolese pastors. However different they may be from each other, they highlight ideas of success and prosperity that encourage us to rethink the socioeconomic role of Pentecostalism in Afric…

Stuck in Kampala: Witchcraft Attacks, "Blocages" and Immobility in the Experience of Born-Again Congolese Refugees in Uganda
Based on fieldwork conducted in 2013 and 2014, this article analyses the role of religion in a context of displacement, where 40,000 refugees from the Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo have been living in Kampala, Uganda. It focuses on the presence of Congolese Églises de Réveil in the neighborhood of Katwe, one of the most populated areas of Kampala. After introducing the context, it first examines the concept of “blocage” (“being …
Strings Attached: Aids and the Rise of Transnational Connections in Africa
The abstinence campaign and the construction of the Balokole identity in the Ugandan Pentecostal movement
Based on fieldwork data collected since 2005 in Uganda, the paper explores the connections between young Pentecostals' involvement in HIV prevention programs, with a particular attention to the “abstinence campaign”, and the process of identity construction within the movement itself. I show how the rise of the AIDS epidemic contributed in a decisive way to shaping the construction of meaning, and thus the action, of the Balokole (“the Savedees”)…
