du Cap une rflexion sur la libert et sur les manires de l'tudier avec les outils de l'anthropologie.L'anne prcdente, en 1989, la fin de la Guerre froide semble marquer le dbut de la mondialisation des thories conomiques et des modes de gouvernance nolibraux, tels qu'ils se sont dvelopps dans l'ancien bloc de l'Ouest depuis les annes 1980, sous le premier ministre britannique de Margaret Thatcher (1979-1990) et la prsidence amricaine de Ronald Reagan (1981-1989).Cette vision de l'conomie et de la politique idalise le libre march, antagonise la solidarit sociale et communautaire et prne the uncompromising autonomy of the individual, rights-bearing, physically discrete, monied, market-driven, materially inviolate human subject (Comaroff & Comaroff 1999 : 3).Deux ans plus tard, en 1991, l'Afrique du Sud abolit l'apartheid, une tape cruciale vers des lections dmocratiques en 1994.Ce tournant est un grand moment d'ouverture, marqu en Afrique et ailleurs par la conviction que les droits civils et sociaux, considrs comme acquis dans le Nord global, allaient s'tendre l'chelle mondiale, transformant la vie de millions d'tres humains, restreints jusqu'alors dans leur quotidien par des rgimes autoritaires.Connu pour son chef-d'oeuvre Europe and the People Without History (Wolf 1982) -une contribution essentielle pour comprendre le capitalisme
