  • Computer-Baesed Recognition of Perceptual Patterns and Learning Styles in Rhythmic Dictation Exercises

    Open Access•Fred T Hofstetter•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1981•Cited by: 1•References: 2

During the 1978-79 academic year, sixteen freshman music majors participated in an experiment in which their response data were saved as they worked through 24 units of rhythmic dictation exercises in the University of Delaware's GUIDO® system. Analysis of the student data base showed perceptual patterns and learning styles common to exercises in both simple and compound meters. First, it was found that basic undotted, nonduplet, nontriplet notes…

  • Computer-Based Recognition of Perceptual Patterns in Chord Quality Dictation Exercises

    Fred T Hofstetter•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1980•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This experiment measured achievement of 18 freshman music majors in the GUIDO chord quality program and determined the pattern of student responses to chord quality dictation exercises. A two-part test to measure student achievement on chords in close position and on chords in open position was administered before any training began, at the end of the first semester after training on chords in close position but before training in open position, …

  • Evaluation of a Competency-Based Approach to Teaching Aural Interval Identification

    Open Access•Fred T Hofstetter•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1979

Twenty-four music majors participated in an evaluation of a competency-based approach to teaching aural Interval Identification. The students were taught ascending Intervals using a traditional learning sequence from the Benward ear-training series. Twelve continued to learn descending, mixed ascending and descending, and harmonic intervals by the same methods in a sequential control group. The other twelve learned in a competency-based experimen…

  • Computer-Based Recognition of Perceptual Patterns in Harmonic Dictation Exercises

    Open Access•Fred T Hofstetter•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1978•Cited by: 6

During the 1975–1976 academic year, student response data was saved for a group of 17 freshman music majors as they worked through 15 units of harmonic dictation exercises delivered on the University of Delaware's GUIDO system. Analysis of the student data base led to the identification of seven confusion tendencies that affect the perception of harmonies: bass line confusions, confusions of inversion, confusions of chord function, confusions of …
