This article demonstrates some of the possibilities of the structured database, National Biographical Dictionary of Swedish Women (Svenskt Kvinnobiografiskt Lexikon, www.skbl.se, hereafter SKBL) for research in women’s and gender history. SKBL is a digitally published biographical dictionary of articles with data on 2,000 Swedish women living from the Middle Ages to the present, published in both Swedish and English. • Comparison of Joint and Muscle Biomechanics in Maximal Flywheel Squat and Leg Press

Open Access•Maria Sjöberg, Hans E Berg et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 48

The aim was to compare the musculoskeletal load distribution and muscle activity in two types of maximal flywheel leg-extension resistance exercises: horizontal leg press, during which the entire load is external, and squat, during which part of the load comprises the body weight. Nine healthy adult habitually strength-training individuals were investigated. Motion analysis and inverse dynamics-based musculoskeletal modelling were used to compute…

  • Mary Elizabeth Ailes. Courage and Grief

    Open Access•Maria Sjöberg•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2019

In a famous and often quoted article from the 1980s, Barton C. Hacker draws attention to the significance of women in early modern armies (“Women and Military Institutions in Early Modern Europe,” Signs 6, no. 4 [1981]: 643–671). Women, who by their contemporaries were accused of being prostitutes and being a general burden to the armies, were, according to Hacker, in fact crucial for the armies to work. In the long run, women accompanying men on…

  • Har världshistorien ett kön? Familj och släkt i världspolitikens mitt

    Open Access•Maria Sjöberg•ARTICLE•FLEKS - Scandinavian Journal of…•2015

In recent decades, gender perspectives have been adopted and elaborated in almost all research areas of history, apart from world history. A review of articles published in the Journal of World History during 2001-13 demonstrates a general pattern of gender blindness in the journal, with a few important exceptions. Several explanations for why world history neglects gender history are examined in this article. First, it has been claimed that worl…

  • Replacing a Father

    Maria Sjöberg•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of History•2014•References: 2

Early modern society was characterized by severe conflicts, but not all were caused by antagonistic relations between military (combatants) and civilian (noncombatants) persons. The civil–military relations were blurred. The separation and differentiation of civil and military functions in society was a process that occurred mainly in the 19th century. This process coincided with a conceptual change of the nature of gender: ‘civil’ became feminin…

  • Women in campaigns 1550–1850 household and homosociality in the Swedish army

    Maria Sjöberg•ARTICLE•The History of the Family•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The article presents the main results from my study of social conditions in the Swedish Army between 1550 and 1850. The focus is on women's involvement and importance in the military. The most strikingly result is that women for a long time played a more crucial role in the Army than many people are unaware of. As a consequence, the unisexual, masculine, compulsory, military service which existed during most of the 20th century can be treated as …
