A Comparison of the Degree Results of University Students From Co‐educational and Single‐sex Schools
S ummary . The university degree results of students from co‐educational and single‐sex schools were compared and found to be closely similar except that more first year drop‐outs may occur among the single‐sex educated students. The sample consisted of 221 matched pairs and was drawn from those who took the WJEC examination in a three‐year entry to Welsh university colleges, well before the students sat their finals. Variables matched or separat…
The Urban or Rural Background of First‐year University Students in Relation to Their Academic Performance
S ummary . The association of the urban/rural variable with university academic performance was assessed by a matched pair procedure. Variables matched were sex, co‐educational/single‐sex school, examining board (W.J.E.C. only), Arts/Science faculties, and (for A‐level) number of subjects taken, best subject, average grade and number of attempts. Social class was mostly matched but partly balanced. Student pairs were selected from a three‐year en…
A Semantic Differential Comparison of Certain Attitudes of University Students From Co‐educational and Single‐sex School Towards Their Schools
S ummary . Scores on the ‘evaluation,’ ‘potency’ and ‘activity’ of four concepts concerning school and four about the university were obtained from a Semantic Differential test completed by 274 first‐year university students. The women from girls’ schools tended to evaluate ‘my school’ and ‘school teacher’ lower than did the co‐educated women (P Co‐educated students rated ‘school,’ ‘teacher,’ and ‘classroom’ as significantly less potent than did …

The Academic Progress of University Students From Co-educational and Single-sex Schools
A comparison of the first-year progress of university students from co-educational schools with those from single-sex schools was made by a matched pair procedure. All students who met the A-level criteria for matching were extracted from those who took the examination of the WJEC in a three-year entry to Welsh University Colleges, with first-year results unknown to the selectors. Variables matched or separated were Arts/Science, sex, population …
A comparison of the academic performance of male and female students in schools and universities
I will preface these remarks by saying that I am a fierce believer in the fundamental equality of the sexes—after all, I am told that they are both necessary for the survival of the human race—or at least this seems to be so at the moment, though the way things are going it might at some time cease to be so. A second caveat is that I am not going to pretend to talk about the whole field of attainment, it would be inevitable that one would say too…

Premature Retirement of Women Teachers From Girls' and Mixed Secondary Schools
S ummary . This article attempts to inject objective evidence into the arguments about co‐education. The rates of premature retirements of women teachers in mixed and girls' secondary schools are compared as rough indices of the level of nervous tension in such schools. The analysis includes data on the age distribution of women teachers, based on a national sample. As a byproduct is found an interesting difference in the rate of retirement from …
Co‐education as a Possible Influence on the Desire for Marriage
S ummary . It was hypothesized that co‐educational, as opposed to single‐sex, schooling might have a slight effect on the desire for marriage. Estimates were obtained from student teachers in England and Wales. The differences, though interesting, were not statistically significant. The influence of social class and of siblings on the estimates was also examined
Pupil‐teacher Relationships in Co‐educational and Single‐sex Grammar Schools
S ummary . The sample population was some 2,000 ex‐grammar school pupils who were intending teachers; it was, therefore, representative of only a section of the grammar school population. A previous article based on 1,500 of this sample reported that the co‐educated women found the school atmosphere pleasanter and life in school happier than did the women educated in girls' schools; the co‐educated men had similar but slighter trends, significant…
The Happiness of Pupils in Co‐educational and Single‐sex Grammar Schools: A Comparative Assessment
S ummary . A questionnaire was administered to some 1,500 ex‐pupils of grammar schools, who were students in teacher training courses. It included questions on the pleasantness of the school atmosphere, the happiness of life in school, and the preference for mixed or single‐sex schools. The sample is admittedly not representative of all types of ex‐pupils. The differences found between the co‐educated women and women from girls' schools were high…

An Investigation Into the Comparative Response of Boys and Girls to Scripture as a School Subject in Certain Co‐educational Grammar Schools in Industrial South Wales
S ummary . An attitude scale and questionnaire were administered to pupils in the fourth forms of ten co‐educational grammar schools in industrial South Wales, in order to compare the response of the sexes towards Scripture. The attitude of both sexes was favourable, the girls being more favourable than the boys. The scores for various sections of the syllabus were examined. ‘The Acts’ were liked least by both sexes. Interesting social class diff…

Reflections on Research on Allocation to Secondary Education
S ummary . Research on allocation at 11+ tends to ignore some aspects of the situation. The concept of failure in the grammar school is too imprecise. When correlations are made more attention should be paid to the distribution of movement between the variables. Prediction research should take account of the difference between the performance of boys and girls in the grammar school, and between girls', boys' and mixed schools. Low correlations ma…
