  • From the Operating Room to Everyday Life: The Sustained Liminality of Kidney Transplant Recipients

    Open Access•Hicran Karataş•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2026

Kidney transplantation offers patients the prospect of a “second life,” yet this renewed existence does not necessarily mark the end of liminality. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork in Turkey, this study examines how recipients of cadaveric ( n = 22) and living-related ( n = 26) kidney donations, along with their family caregivers, continue to navigate an unresolved threshold between illness and recovery. Data were collected through in-depth parti…

  • Death and Organ Donation Between Four Gates and Forty Posts: Insights From Alevi Faith

    Open Access•Hicran Karataş•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•2025

Alevi-Bektashi adherents constitute a significant population both in Türkiye and in the diaspora. Within the framework of the erkân (Alevi-Bektashi social norms), cadaveric organ donation is strongly encouraged as a pathway to the donor's eternal salvation, whereas living organ donations are subject to specific regulations. This study, based on in-depth face-to-face and online interviews with 21 ocakzade Alevi religious leaders (dede), investigat…

  • Beyond Death: Exploring Cultural Perceptions in Cadaveric Organ Donation

    Open Access•Hicran Karataş•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•2024

Advancements in medicine introduced a relatively invented death into our lives: Brain Death. It intermingles with our perceptions of classical death due to knowing the heart is beating, the color of the skin is pink, and the body's temperature is warm. Hence, accepting brain death as death might get complicated in terms of relatives of the brain-dead person. The interviews revealed that the reluctance to cadaveric organ donations is highly connec…

  • Was there a Better Time to be Mother? Past and Present of the Socio-Cultural Fear of Crime

    Hicran Karataş•ARTICLE•Revista de etnografie și folclor…•2024•References: 39

Fear of crime refers to the fear of being a victim of crime, and it is nurtured by folklore and the media. Folklore fosters fear of crime by using oral tradition transferred throughout generations by updating old contexts into modern times. On the other hand, the media visualizes the possibility of being a victim by introducing the real-life experiences of victims. Contrary to folklore, victims presented in the media seem more accessible, and the…

  • The liminal experience of awaiting for a cadaveric kidney donation: I would not wish it on even my enemy

  • Ritual, Risk, and Danger: Avoidance Rituals among Antiquity Looters

    Open Access•Hicran Karataş•ARTICLE•Folklore Electronic Journal of…•2024

This paper deals with the role of taboos and avoidance rituals as a means of psycho-cultural adaptation to taking personal risks among illicit antiquity looters in the Black Sea region of Turkey. My ethnographic fieldwork showed that antiquity looters indeed cared more about the possibility of being crushed by spiritual creatures than of being caught by law enforcement. Spiritual creatures, namely jinn, are the most unpredictable threats imagined…

  • Risk Rituals and Female Physicians: Reining Uncertainty with ritual in the Trans

    Open Access•Hicran Karataş•ARTICLE•Uluslararasi Kibris Universitesi…•2023•References: 6

  • Personal Experience Stories at the Crossroad of Archaeology and Folklore

    Hicran Karataş•ARTICLE•Revista de etnografie și folclor…•2023•References: 38

Archaeological heritage of Turkey has been suffering for ages from severe destruction through the activities of local antiquities looters. The main reasons for this escalating phenomenon among the Turkish population include poverty, enhanced global demand for looted archaeological material in the worldwide market, gaps in laws, folklore, and the addiction to adrenalin experienced by looters. To comprehend the ongoing archaeological destruction ca…

  • Archaeological Destruction and Folklore: Spiritual Guidance and Looting in Turkey

    Open Access•Hicran Karataş•ARTICLE•Trames Journal of the Humanities…•2022

The ongoing destruction of archaeological sites in Anatolia is well known but less so are the Anatolianâ Turkish oral traditions, beliefs and social norms that tolerate the irreversible damage being done by the local communities involved. This paper reports the findings of a qualitative research I undertook in the Black Sea region of Turkey where extensive looting occurs including the Safranbolu World Heritage Site. Using an ethno-graphic approac…

    Open Access•Hicran Karataş•ARTICLE•Uluslararasi Kibris Universitesi…•2021•References: 6
