Youth work pedagogy in higher education and the importance of not-knowing
Within education, we often encounter the urgent need to recruit teachers who possess subject-specific knowledges and who can pedagogically teach the students the right things. In this article, I turn to youth work and the statement “I have a plan to not have plan” to put forward another view of pedagogical work—one that views knowledge also as non-knowledge and signifies an unmaking of normative defined notions of education, and by doing so creat…
The Case for a Sámi “Trail of Tears”
This paper presents a visual metaphor or figure as a tool for Indigenous mobilisation: an imaginary S & aacute;mi "Trail of Tears." This imaginary trail recalls the largely untold history of the forced evictions of S & aacute;mi families in Sweden during the first half of the twentieth century. We engage Agamben's political philosophy to examine and interpret the colonial present in Swedish S & aacute;pmi and argue that such an imaginary trail al…
Re-thinking official educational organization towards friction-zones between divergent knowledges
In this article, I re-think official educational organization toward friction-zones. Thinking with a swimming event in physical education, and Deleuze’s notion of pure difference and its accompanying characteristics, non-linearity, decentralization, pluralistic knowledge, virtual and actual multiplicities, nomadic waiting, and open ends, I outline conditions for official educational organization in the encounter between divergent knowledges. The …
Becoming interested-the evolvement of research interest in case study research on sports
This article challenge research political assumptions of research interests as context specific phenomena predefined by researchers and others in case study research on sports. By adopting a Deleuzian perspective of materiality, the aim is to overturn academic power dimensions as well as anthropocentric focuses and instead explore how research interests emerge in case-assemblages. This is a radical shift that re-theorizes the production of resear…
Is It Possible to Think Physical Education Forward and Dismantle Ourselves—in a Quantum Space
This paper invites readers to an encounter of novel learning in the school subject physical education, and specifically swimming training. In collaboration with Deleuze’s immanent philosophy and creative observations in a case-assemblage, I speculate about productive experiences and educational events as movements toward physical activation, higher education, and the dissolution of health inequalities. Troubling situations of a standardized model…
Thinking With New Materialism in Qualitative Case Studies
In this article, we discuss challenges and implications of thinking with new materialisms and the Deleuzian philosophy of immanence in qualitative case studies. The aim is to establish a terrain and language of 'minor case studies.' Deleuze denies two-world ontologies and the ontologically status of single bodies, emphasizing instead how assemblages of human and non-human bodies together produce the world. In this terrain, cases are not objects o…
New forms of work among young people
Changes in the labor marked globally and in the Nordic countries involve new forms of work and atypical employment among young workers. A significant proportion of young workers are in temporary positions, working irregular working hours, and part-time work. This also applies to the young workers portrayed in this report. They are working at online platforms as e-sport gamers, YouTuber or Influencers, an thus move into the borderland of the meani…
Accent-induced bias in linguistic transcriptions
Many linguistic analyses rely on phonetic transcriptions. Two factors that might affect the accuracy of transcriptions are perceived accent and the listener's linguistic knowledge about that accent. This article focuses on the susceptibility of transcribers to such accent-induced bias, based on speaker's accent, transcriber's variety, and the transcriber's knowledge about the language variety they are transcribing. We offer a method to statistica…
Från fula gubbar och liderliga gummor till virila casanovor och glada änkor
Two lines of thoughts have historically characterised the understanding of sexuality in old age in Western society. On the one hand elderly persons sexuality have been portrayed in literature and dramas since the antiquity and onwards. However these images have often been negative, ridiculing sexuality in late life. On the other hand old age has been associated with asexuality – philosophers, and other intellectuals as well as religious authoriti…
Resenären som aldrig kom fram
The articulation of homelessness is a recurrent theme in late 20th century narratives of travels between classes — whether in academic dissertations, autobiographies or in the literary genre. Travellers of an elder generation not only seem to have arrived, but they also seem to be more content with having travelled. This difference is analysed in terms of subjective class identity — concerning one's own thoughts and experiences of belonging, and …
