    Marcello Carmagnani•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2007

Luis Medina Peña is a political scientist who first tested his skills in the historical field in 1979 and in 1994, presenting interesting essays dealing with the reconstruction of the Mexican state after the revolution (Civilismo y modernización del autoritarismo, 1940 – 1952 and Hacia el nuevo estado: México, 1920 – 1993). In this third historical exploration, Medina Peña examines Mexico’s political system before and after the 1911 revolution in…

  • Un siglo de deuda puública en México

    Marcello Carmagnani•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2004

This volume on Mexico’s foreign debt is part of a series devoted to Mexico’s economic history, and both students and the general public will find it useful, since the previously published articles reprinted here are difficult to access. The first two articles analyze the impact of the 1820 financial bubble on Mexico’s economy. Reinhard Liehr’s 1983 article concerning merchant bank houses offers an excellent analysis of the role they played in the…

  • Response

    Open Access•Marcello Carmagnani•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•1985

The way in which individual historians conceive of their craft is clearly shown when they evaluate historiographic results. If, as in my case, one thinks that history should lead to a critical reflection of the society studied, the result will be a historiographic review that presents problems, debates them, and adopts a certain position. Obviously, this way of approaching a historiographic review (which will not necessarily please everyone) has …

  • The Inertia of Clio: The Social History of Colonial Mexico

    Open Access•Marcello Carmagnani•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•1985•Cited by: 2•References: 25

This article represents an attempt to understand the changes that have taken place in the traditional vision of colonial society in New Spain as shaped by past historiography, drawing on works published between 1970 and 1981. This essay was not conceived as a bibliographic summary that would examine themes, review hypotheses, and evaluate the sources used by different authors. Instead, my analysis will give greater importance to the topics that h…
