Punishing or regulating? US media attention to hate crime and speech
Why the Public Supports the Human Rights of Prisoners and Asylum Seekers
What factors shape support for the human rights of prisoners and asylum seekers at the individual level? Although the human rights literature has expanded greatly in the last 30 years, comparatively little attention has been paid to (a) the many human rights outside of a very small set of physical or bodily integrity rights and (b) the role of public opinion. We build a theoretical model of various human rights as public opinion-related policy ch…
Do NGO Restrictions Limit Terrorism? Smear Campaigns or Counterterrorism Tools
Do initiatives to limit nongovernmental organization (NGO) activities work to limit terrorist attacks? Despite regime rhetoric, we argue that NGO restrictions and repression can heighten grievances and limit nonviolent options for citizens to express dissent, broadening support for terrorists and increasing terrorist incidents. Using novel data on NGO restrictions, we fail to find evidence that legal restrictions on NGOs reduce the number of terr…
Global perceptions of South Korea's Covid-19 policy responses
This article focuses on South Korea as a case, analyzes a collection of 87,487 tweets referencing both COVID-19 and South Korea during the period of the pandemic, and examines global users’ understandings and/or assessments of South Korean responses to the health crisis. This article uses Pseudo-document-based Topic Model (PTM) as an advanced machine learning technique for classifying short texts into viable topics or themes. In the PTM results, …
Diverse Paths to CSR in Game Industry
An Analysis on the Factors affecting people’s attitude toward conscientious objection to military service
Political Signaling and International Pressures
Polarized embrace
Past studies of human rights discourse have centralized civil and political rights over other types of rights, and have thus yielded a biased understanding of how human rights have evolved. This scholarship has also neglected the role of the political slant of reporting agencies in framing topics and issues covering human rights. This study offers new theoretical and analytical solutions to such limits by analyzing a newly compiled data corpus co…

The construction of human rights actorhood
This article investigates the sources of human rights “actorhood”—the extent to which people understand, support and implement human rights—by examining a novel human rights survey that was embedded in the 2011 Korean General Social Survey. My research uses ordinary-least-squares regression analyses to explore the factors that lead to individual differences in awareness and engagement. I employ four broad theoretical frameworks to explain the det…
Securitising, Economising and Humanising Immigration
Immigration poses a dilemma for host states. Embracing international migrants contributes to economic prosperity and enhances the national reputation as a guardian of human rights, while simultaneously triggering security concerns. How can a migrant-receiving state address this dilemma? Using the case of the Employment Permit System (EPS) enacted in South Korea in 2003, which was the first law to protect the basic rights of foreign workers, this …
Love thy neighbor
Using a Tobit analysis, this article examines factors influencing asylum seekers’ filing of asylum applications and host countries’ recognition of convention refugees. From the views that stress socio-politico-economic conditions, we find that welfare-provisional and geographically close countries often become targets of asylum seekers, whereas politically secured and geographically remote countries have higher propensity to recognize legal statu…
Unesco and the Associated Schools Project
The UNESCO Associated Schools Project emphasizes world community, human rights, and international understanding. This article investigates the emergence and global diffusion of the project from 1953 to 2001, estimating the influence of national, regional, and world characteristics on the likelihood of a country adopting a UNESCO school. It also addresses the effects of national linkages to the international human rights regime. The results reveal…
The Origins of the Public Sphere and Civil Society
This article explores an East Asian parallel to the “structural transformation” of the European public sphere and civil society by studying private academies and Confucian literati petitions in Chosŏn Korea from 1506 to 1800. During this period, the Confucian literati emerged as the new public and challenged royal authority, engaging in a broad range of public activities through the academies and petitions. Voluntaristic and nongovernmental conne…
