  • Does Local Representation Reduce Self-Determination Conflict

    Open Access•Alejandro Corvalan•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2024•References: 23

There is ample evidence that the political exclusion of minorities from state power increases the risk of conflict. Nevertheless, do these same results apply to local representation? I explore this question using the success in mayoral elections of the Chilean Mapuche, a deprived indigenous minority in a longstanding conflict against the Chilean state. Combining a novel database on conflict and a surname strategy to single out Mapuche mayors, pan…

  • Indigenous representation and participation: The case of the Chilean Mapuche

    Open Access•Pedro Cayul, Alejandro Corvalan•ARTICLE•Electoral Studies•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 49

According to the empowerment hypothesis, minority politicians encourage minority participation. The relationship between representation and participation has been extensively analyzed for several ethnic minorities and women, but there are no studies for indigenous populations in Latin America. This paper evaluates the link between descriptive representation and electoral registration of Mapuche, a deprived indigenous minority from the South of Ch…

  • Introducing Maceda: New micro-data on an indigenous self-determination conflict

Open Access•Pedro Cayul, Alejandro Corvalan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 27

This article introduces MACEDA, a micro-level dataset on the self-determination (SD) conflict between the Chilean state and the indigenous Mapuche. Although SD disputes are one of the most common conflicts in the world, and indigenous movements represent about 40% of all SD movements, this is the first micro-dataset focused on an indigenous SD conflict. MACEDA covers the period 1990-2016, including more than 2,600 events collected from local medi…

  • Estimating Intergenerational Mobility With Grouped Data: A Critique of Clark’s the Son Also Rises

    Open Access•F Torche, Alejandro Corvalan•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•2018•Cited by: 15•References: 29

This article distinguishes three measures of intergenerational economic mobility that emerge when the population is divided into groups: overall individual mobility, within-group mobility, and between-group mobility. We clarify their properties and the relationship between them. We then evaluate Clark's use of surname between-group persistence as a preferred measure of intergenerational mobility in the book The Son Also Rises: Surnames and the Hi…

  • Bounding Causal Effects in Ecological Inference Problems

Open Access•Alejandro Corvalan, Emerson Melo et al.•ARTICLE•Political Science Research and…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 8

This note illustrates a new method for making causal inferences with ecological data. We show how to combine aggregate outcomes with individual demographics from separate data sources to make causal inferences about individual behavior. In addressing such problems, even under the selection on observables assumption often made in the treatment effects literature, it is not possible to identify causal effects of interest. However, recent results fr…

  • Class-Biased Electoral Participation: The Youth Vote in Chile

    Open Access•Alejandro Corvalan, Paulo Cox•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2013•Cited by: 16•References: 25

There is no other country where the division between the old and young electorate is as striking as in Chile. For older voters, turnout exceeded, on average, 90 percent in 2009; for those aged less than 30, it fell below 30 percent. Using individual survey data from 2006, 2008, and 2010, this article studies the current socioeconomic composition of the Chilean young electorate. First, it shows that the young electorate is class-biased. Income is …

  • Reestablishing the Income-Democracy Nexus

Jess Benhabib, Alejandro Corvalan et al.•REPORT•National Bureau of Economic…•2011

A number of recent empirical studies have cast doubt on the "modernization theory" of democratization, which posits that increases in income are conducive to increases in democracy levels. This doubt stems mainly from the fact that while a strong positive correlation exists between income and democracy levels, the relationship disappears when one controls for country fixed effects. This raises the possibility that the correlation in the data refl…
