“De-particularizing” a Bourgeois Ethos in the German Empire: A Postcolonial Complement to Bourdieu’s Theory of State-Making
In his sociology of the state, Bourdieu introduces the concept of “de-particularization” to spotlight processes through which those who dominate the state establish their particular lifestyle as a universal cultural norm. While Bourdieu did not elaborate on such processes, the article develops a specific mechanism of de-particularization in articulating his framework with postcolonial perspectives on analogies between race and class. Focusing on …
The Assemblage and Dismantling of Access Barriers in Administrative Bureaucracies: Constructing the Problem of Diversity in the German Welfare State
The article extends the literature on the construction of "diversity management" by personnel managers in corporate America. Such research has highlighted that Human Resource (HR) specialists draw heavily on social-scientific thinking in implementing various remedies against discrimination. However, it has paid less attention to how such esoteric views of reality, comprising such "things" as "structural barriers" impeding occupational advancement…
Constructing a 'staying' problem. On the role of statistical indicators in consolidating an enduring bureaucratic jurisdiction for immigrant integration
The article examines the introduction of quantitative perspectives from the sociology of immigration into administrative departments for immigrant integration in Germany. Using Andrew Abbott’s concept of professional jurisdictions within competitive ecologies, the article shows how statistical indicators enabled administrators to consolidate a lasting responsibility for the problem of immigrant integration within public administrations. In invest…
The culture of official statistics. Symbolic domination and 'bourgeois' assimilation in quantitative measurements of immigrant integration in Germany
While cultural sociology has recently made a comeback in research on social inequality both in the context of poverty studies and studies of immigrant integration, it has rarely investigated how particular constructions of the problem of socioeconomic mobility are themselves culturally situated. The article addresses this neglect by investigating the problematization of disadvantaged lives within the relational framework of Bourdieu's cultural th…
Symbolic revolutions. Mobilizing a neglected Bourdieusian concept for historical sociology
The article builds on a recent literature that has sought to underscore the relevance of Bourdieu's field theory for historical-sociological analysis. It draws attention to symbolic revolutions, a concept that has been given short shrift in this literature and even in Bourdieu's own expositions of his field-theoretical apparatus. The article argues that symbolic revolutions denote a universal mechanism of field-internal change which extends and c…
Measures and Their Countermeasures: Reflexivity and Second‐Order Reactivity in Quantifying Immigrant Integration
Sociology is inherently reflexive. It deals with actors who themselves are constantly engaged in sociological reasoning. Concepts from academic sociology are thus prone to enter and affect the very dynamics they describe. The sociology of quantification is particularly attuned to such paradoxical effects of “reactivity,” that is, measurements and categories altering observed realities. The article builds on these insights but extends them by addi…
Performing the religious economy in nineteenth-century evangelical missions: A “third-way” approach to studying religious markets
The Global “Bookkeeping” of Souls: Quantification and Nineteenth-Century Evangelical Missions
This article combines perspectives of the sociology of quantification and field theory in analyzing the emergence of a field of global evangelical missions. Drawing analogies to Werner Sombart's thesis on the relationship of double-entry bookkeeping and the genesis of capitalism, it shows how the introduction of statistical methods and accounting techniques into the realm of missions in the nineteenth century constructed a visibility of a global …
Taken in by the numbers game: The globalization of a religious ‘illusio’ and ‘doxa’ in nineteenth-century evangelical missions to India

Taken in by the Numbers Game: The Globalization of a Religious 'Illusio' and 'Doxa' in Nineteenth-Century Evangelical Missions to India
While the Bourdieusian concepts of capital and relational configurations of positions and position-takings have recently been fruitfully employed to theorize global fields, this paper argues that the concepts of illusio and doxa are especially conducive to analyzing the globalization of a field as an expansion into and transformation of formerly independent national arenas. In deploying the concept of illusio as a (quasi-libidinous) investment in…
Replik auf André Kieserlings Aufsatz „Felder und Klassen: Pierre Bourdieus Theorie der modernen Gesellschaft“ / Does Bourdieu Really Have so Little “Class”? A …
