Created with digital motion capture, or mocap, the virtual dances Ghostcatching and as.phyx.ia render movement abstracted from choreographic bodies. These depictions of gestural doubles or ‘ghosts’ trigger a sense of the uncanny rooted in mocap’s digital processes. Examining these material processes, this article argues that this digital optical uncanny precipitates from the intersubjective relationship of performer, technology, and spectator. Mo…

Records that play
Much of the discourse surrounding sampling practice has been couched in an archaic rhetoric of originality and creativity, predicated on the reproductive mode of creation rather than the practice's own creative logic. These notions have emerged from a metaphysics which privileges the origin as the centre of semantic production. However, this discursive preoccupation with the past is not entirely irrelevant in sampling practice. Rather, the histor…
Educating Social Workers to Establish Well-Formed Goals
Although effective goal-setting is universally accepted as good social work practice, students often struggle with establishing well-formed goals. Therefore, the authors have developed an educational approach to engage students in learning the skills of effective goal-setting. This manuscript presents a conceptual approach and instructional activities to prepare practitioners to establish well-formed goals, engage in goal-focused actions, and eva…

Evaluation of Two Interviewing Skills Measures
This article reports an initial validation of an instrument that measures basic interviewing skills and compares its psychometric results with another instrument that has been used more frequently to measure similar skills. Four field supervisors rated 30 students' videotaped interviews (N=120) using two instruments, the validation, and a comparison instrument. The current validation instrument had high internal consistency reliability, a clear f…

A Transactional Analysis Decision-Making Model and Ethical Hierarchy
Making ethical decisions is often difficult. This article discusses a five-step process that moves from identifying a problematic situation, to determining its professional relevance, and then to sorting out the differences between ideals, values, and ethics. The last steps relate to legal duties and ethical obligations. Even with this type of thorough consideration, problems may still exist because there are frequent conflicts between ethical ob…
Anxiety and Projection as Related to Games and Scripts
