From classification to decoding: Machine learning unveils traditional village spatial patterns rooted in environmental domestication—a case from the Northwestern Sichuan Tibetan–Qiang region
Sensory processing atypicalities and social responsiveness in autism spectrum disorder: The mediation of executive function
These findings underscore the importance of both sensory processing and executive functioning in the social responsiveness of children with ASD. The results suggest a potential mechanistic framework in which executive functions serve as a mediating factor between sensory processing and social behavior in this population
Replacing sedentary behaviour with physical activity and all-cause mortality in older adults: Two-cohort study in China and the UK
BACKGROUND: Older adults typically have higher sedentary behaviour (SB) and lower physical activity (PA) than younger adults. Studies on replacing SB with PA in relation to all-cause mortality in racially diverse older adults remain limited. METHODS: This study included 122 966 older adults from the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) and 207 212 older adults from the UK Biobank (UKB). SB and PA were assessed using baseline questionnaires, with PA class…

Emptiness Is to Womanism as Purple Is to Lavender: Buddhist Womanism Revisited in Alice Walker's Taking the Arrow Out of the Heart
This paper argues that the philosophy of Buddhist emptiness not only finds expression in Alice Walker's Taking the Arrow Out of the Heart with its two most salient manifestationsdependent origination and impermanence, but is applied to alleviate suffering in the poetry, and the two approaches the poetry collection are (1) to recognize emptiness in times of crisis and (2) to cultivate bodhicitta through using emptiness to extend loving kindness to…
Strategic Use of Karma in Lan Cao's Monkey Bridge
Most critics focus on the pain and suffering of the first-generation Vietnamese immigrants depicted in Lan Cao's Monkey Bridge. This paper explores how Cao strategically uses the philosophy of karma in Vietnamese Buddhism to provide a method for alleviating their suffering in this novel. It argues that she employs karma to investigate the origins of the adversity and trauma experienced by the first-generation Vietnamese immigrants, including the …
Intention, Action, and Outcome: Sanctioning Patterns in the Four Pārājikas of the Vinayas
The sanctions for prohibited behavior in Vinaya texts are based on the precepts. It is, however, in the padabhājaniya (commentaries on the prātimokṣa) and the vinītaka (case-law sections) that these sanctions are further developed and explained. In the Vinayas, intention (the monk's motivations while committing an act), action (the action that the monk carried out), and outcome (the effect of this action on others) are generally understood to be …
Toward Buddhist Womanism: Tonglen Practice in The Color Purple
Tonglen is a Tibetan Buddhist practice that aims at developing the practitioner's bodhicitta. In this article, I argue that it not only finds expression in Alice Walker's The Color Purple through the protagonist Celie, but adds more complexity to the womanist philosophy for which Walker has been ensconced in positions of influence. More specifically, Celie follows an implied Buddhist practice of tonglen; in the process of "taking in and sending o…
