Three New IriKAgina “Reform” Fragments from Girsu
The well-known “Reform Texts” of IriKAgina, king of Lagash/Girsu (24th century BCE), are a key source for reconstructing the social and economic history of Early Mesopotamia. They offer insights through the lens of royal ideology and its legislative and political embodiments. This article presents an edition of three new fragments belonging to this important composition, which were recently discovered at Girsu during surface surveys conducted by …
Narratives of Legitimacy in Carbon Forestry
Forests are central to climate change mitigation, driving a surge in afforestation, reforestation, and averted deforestation projects. Involving a range of actors, these initiatives reflect the rising influence of non-state entities in forest governance. Although often presented as delivering economic, environmental, and social benefits, carbon forestry projects frequently overlook local land rights, leading to displacement and disrupted liveliho…
Sacred Space and Ritual Behaviour in Ancient Mesopotamia
Girsu, the modern site of Tello (southern Iraq), represents one of the earliest known urban centres of the ancient world, along with Uruk, Eridu, and Ur. During the 3rd millennium BCE (3000–2000 BCE), Girsu was revered as the sanctuary of the Sumerian heroic deity Ningirsu, who fought with supernatural beasts and made possible the introduction of irrigation and agriculture in Sumer. While much is known about the gods, their roles, and rituals ins…

Women Doing Science, a social media effort, was founded by the authors to address this representation gap by shar…

Muslim Communities in Europe
This article introduces issues relevant to the presence of Muslims in Europe. While European nations are still in the process of acknowledging the diversity and rich cultural heritages of Muslim communities, Muslims are adjusting to living as minorities within a non-Muslim society. The predominant `us'/`other' dichotomy embedded in historical and political encounters has raised significant issues affecting mutual integration and acceptance. On th…
