  • Das Mittelalter als Moderne

Horst Bredekamp•CHAPTER•Von Carl Schmitt Zur Kulturgeschich…•2025

The Middle Ages as modernity. Using the example of the discovery of nature (sense of natural beauty) and the body (in the form of swimming), this article analyzes two motifs that are genuinely attributed to modernity, but whose origins the author locates in the Middle Ages. Both motifs were already developed in the epoch (the Middle Ages) after which they were supposedly invented. The Middle Ages were not the legitimization pattern of modernity, …

  • Skizze einer politischen Ikonologie von Großräumen

    Horst Bredekamp•ARTICLE•Archiv des Völkerrechts•2023

According to Carl Schmitt's account in (The Nomos of the Earth) the modern political and legal era begins with a new image of the world). The globe, the spherical model and iconic representation of Planet Earth brought about all kinds of imaginations of its political and geographical division (Teilung). Nomos, space, and political iconology are closely connected in this interpretation. The article discusses examples of a political iconology of »g…

  • Walter Benjamin’s Esteem for Carl Schmitt

Horst Bredekamp, Jens Meierhenrich et al.•BOOK•The Oxford Handbook of Carl Schmitt•2015

This chapter shows why Carl Schmitt’s philosophical theories retained their fascination and conceptual force for young intellectuals in postwar Germany. Publication of a letter Walter Benjamin had written to Schmitt in 1930, which revealed his esteem for Schmitt, was a catalyst for philosophers such as Jacob Taubes, who had distanced himself from Schmitt. Taubes’s research into the two men’s relationship helped to overcome the postwar constructio…

  • Culture, Technology, Cultural Techniques - Moving Beyond Text1

    Open Access•Sybille Krämer, Horst Bredekamp•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2013•Cited by: 8•References: 1

Originally published in 2003, this article presents one of the first attempts to provide a systematic summary of the new concept of cultural technique. It is, in essence, an extended checklist aimed at overcoming the textualist bias of traditional cultural theory by highlighting what is elided by this bias. On the one hand, to speak of cultural techniques redirects our attention to material and physical practices that all too often assume the sha…

The ArgumentThe article deals with the interrelation between Galileo and the visual arts. It presents a couple of drawings from the hand of Galileo and confronts them with Viviani's report that Galileo had not only wanted to become an artist in his youth but stayed close to the field of visual arts throughout his lifetime. In the ambiance of these drawings the famous moon watercolors are not in the dark. They represent a very acute and reasonable…
