Big Data Insights Into Social Macro Trends: Expanding the Horizon (1800–2018)
This article examines how big data can inform and challenge established theories and future visions of society. Utilising the most recent version of the arguably largest free online corpus, the Google Books corpus (version 20200217), we replicate and enhance Roth et al.'s (2019a) systems‐theoretical methodology for analysing macro social trends. Thus extending the sample period into the postmillennium era, we detect tectonic shifts in macro socia…
Freedom of Scientific Inquiry and Democracy. A Systems‐Theoretical Approach
The article examines the relationship between democracy and one of its inherent features: freedom of scientific inquiry —a multi‐layered concept closely intertwined with the broader notion of academic freedom—both of which are increasingly under threat worldwide. Based on Luhmann's writings on ecological communication, the article departs from the system/environment distinction and conce…
Political and economic instrumentalisation of science: Towards an extended concept of corruption
Popular perception holds that science has been distorted by the pressure of expectations of economic utility or political desirability. Grounded in Niklas Luhmann's system theory, this paper examines the interplay of the political, economic and scientific subsystem of society to scrutinise the idea that science has been corrupted by economy and politics. To this end, we extend the notion of corruption beyond the common, predominantly legal meanin…
Guiding distinctions of social theory: Results from two online brainstormings and one quantitative analysis of the ISA Books of the XX Century corpus
In this article, we report on the results of two online brainstormings that have collected over 480 and over 219 guiding distinctions of social theory, respectively. We draw on the results of these brainstormings as well as on a quantitative analysis of the Top 100 sociological groundworks as listed in the ISA Books of the XX Century ranking to identify the most influential distinctions of social theory and show that the bulk of these guiding dis…
