This article examines how the Jiangnan Arsenal mediated China’s encounter with Western science during the Self-Strengthening Movement (1860s – 1890s) through a tripartite ecosystemic framework. At the macro-level, the Arsenal is observed as a state-led translation apparatus aimed at bolstering China’s defensive modernization while maintaining cultural sovereignty. • Legal constraints and translation variations

Yang Cheng, Dominic Glynn•ARTICLE•Perspectives•2022•Cited by: 1

The export of traditional Chinese medicinal products (TCMs) poses several problems directly linked to translation. The products themselves and their active ingredients lack notoriety outside Asia. Moreover, claims about the therapeutic virtues of the medicines may not consistently be reproduced as different jurisdictions will not allow them. This article studies the packaging of TCMs sold in the United States of America (USA) using Vinay and Darb…

  • Outline of a theory of non-translation

    Dominic Glynn•ARTICLE•Across Languages and Cultures•2021

Non-translation has not been adequately theorised despite its relevance to conceptualising how texts circulate across linguistic and cultural borders. This article outlines a theory which defines non-translation in three ways: first, in terms of systemic resistance to translation; second, as a set of procedures forming part of an overarching translation strategy; third, as the result of discourse that conceals the process of translation for vario…

This article analyses different methodological approaches adopted by theoretical articles published in translation studies journals. To account for the range of perspectives, a small corpus comprising articles from three journals listed in both the Thomson and Reuters Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and the Arts and Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI) was studied. The article discusses how the methods used could gain in rigor from being forma…

  • Beckett by Brook or theatre uplifted by abusive fidelity

    Open Access•Dominic Glynn•ARTICLE•Francosphères•2020

This article considers Samuel Beckett through the lens of theatre director Peter Brook. More specifically, it looks at the ways in which Brook engages with Beckett, both in his theoretical writings, and in his stage productions. What becomes apparent is not only that Brook highly values Beckett personally, but that he is especially taken with his dramaturgy, the particular quality of which lies, in Brook’s eyes, in its capacity to rid itself of a…

  • Theorising (un)performability and (un)translatability

    Dominic Glynn, James Hadley•ARTICLE•Perspectives•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 7

In recent years, ‘translatability’, or rather, ‘untranslatability’ has been a much-discussed topic in translation studies. However, the state of its theorisation has remained relatively rudimentary, focusing in large part on assertions that specific texts, or textual features cannot be translated on the basis of certain cultural, ideological, or linguistic idiosyncrasies. In theatre and performance studies, the closely comparable notion of ‘unper…

  • Theater Translation Research Methodologies

    Open Access•Dominic Glynn•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020•References: 64

Theater translation is an emerging area of research. However, to date, there has been no detailed consideration of the type of methodologies required to conduct such research. This article examines methods and practices in both theater and translation studies in order to discuss their applicability to study theater translation specifically. It categorizes existing research into output-oriented and process-oriented elaborating the specificities of…

• Franglais Fops” and Mocking the French in English Restoration Theater

    Dominic Glynn•ARTICLE•ANQ A Quarterly Journal of Short…•2018

In the latter half of the seventeenth century, France was the dominant cultural force and England lay under its influence in terms of art and fashion. However, Restoration comedy found a means of turning the power structure on its head by overtly mocking those subjugated by all things French. The stock character commonly known as the “Frenchified fop”, but which I prefer to label a “Franglais fop” for reasons that shall become apparent, is one of…
