  • Making Money

    Open Access•Ole Bjerg•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Sociology•2018

  • Conspiracy Theory

    Open Access•Ole Bjerg, Thomas Presskorn-Thygesen•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2017•Cited by: 21•References: 11

The paper is a contribution to current debates about conspiracy theories within philosophy and cultural studies. Wittgenstein's understanding of language is invoked to analyse the epistemological effects of designating particular questions and explanations as a 'conspiracy theory'. It is demonstrated how such a designation relegates these questions and explanations beyond the realm of meaningful discourse. In addition, Agamben's concept of sovere…

  • How is Bitcoin Money

    Open Access•Ole Bjerg•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2016•Cited by: 24•References: 8

Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer electronic payment system that operates as an independent currency. This paper is a philosophical investigation of the ontological constitution of Bitcoin. Using Slavoj Žižek's ontological triad of the real, the symbolic and the imaginary, the paper distinguishes between three ideal typical theories of money: commodity theory, fiat theory, and credit theory. The constitution of Bitcoin is analysed by comparing the curren…

  • Making ‘Making money

    Open Access•Ole Bjerg, Stephen Dunne•ARTICLE•Finance and Society•2015

Stephen Dunne recently sat down with Ole Bjerg to chair a discussion about his new book Making Money: The Philosophy of Crisis Capitalism (Verso, 2014). We publish an elaborated version of the book's concluding chapter - ‘Life after Debt’ - within this special issue. This interview and question and answer session puts Ole's argument there, as well as the arguments of his book more generally, into a broader context

  • Is there life after debt? Revolution in the age of financial capitalism

    Open Access•Ole Bjerg•ARTICLE•Finance and Society•2015

What happens to classic Marxist notions of revolution, exploitation and class struggle under the premise that we live in the age of financial rather than industrial capitalism? In this essay I argue that the logic of finance is the main structuring principle of the circulation of value, capital, and money today. Accordingly, we should no longer just think of class struggle in terms of workers and capitalists but also in terms of debtors and credi…

  • Too Close to the Money

    Open Access•Ole Bjerg•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 1

This article explores the relationship between gambling and capitalism. The subjective being of the compulsive gambler provides insight into the role of money in capitalism. Using the Lacanian approach of Žižek, money is analysed as a sublime object of capitalist ideology. In gambling, however, the subject engages money in a very direct encounter with the Lacanian 'Real', circumventing the ordinary symbolic order of capitalism. This results in a …

  • Hvordan er systemteorien mulig

    Ole Bjerg•ARTICLE•Dansk Sociologi•2006

How is Systems Theory possible? This article tries to undercover some of the fundamental premises of Niklas Luhmann’s Systems Theory by looking at its way of asking questions. The question: “how is communication possible?” is seen to be the theory’s core question, and the concept of autopoietic social systems the answer to this question. Inspired by Nietzsche’s critique of the Kantian question: “how are synthetic propositions a priori possible?” …

  • Accelerating Luhmann

    Open Access•Ole Bjerg•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2006•Cited by: 4•References: 4

The article is an inquiry into 'the other side' of Luhmann's own concept of reduction of complexity. This inquiry turns out to also be an inquiry into the other side of modernity. What is found is the production of complexity as an inherent part of postmodernity. In the same way that society is both modem and 'post-', systems operate in dialectic oscillation between complexity reduction and complexity production. To facilitate the observation of …

  • Die Welt als Wille und System / The World as Will and System

    Ole Bjerg•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Soziologie•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 3
