Studies on poetry lectureships (Poetikdozenturen) also shed light on the role of literary studies in the production, circulation, and reception of literature. While literary scholars already draw on sociological concepts to analyze their symbolic, institutional, and material entanglements within the literary field, this essay proposes to further examine the boundary work they perform through the format of the poetry lectureship
Ranking Art: Paradigmatic Worldviews in the Quantification and Evaluation of Contemporary Art
While numerous studies have shown diverse effects of rankings, rather little is known about their production. This article contributes to a broader understanding of rankings in society, and does so by focusing on underlying worldviews. I argue that the existence of a ranking and its concrete methodology can be explained by the producer's paradigmatic assumptions about a world-to-be-ranked. Referring to the sociology of knowledge and studies on co…
Lobbying for the Arts
Reactions, reactivity, rampant reductions. On self-fulfilling prophecies, the Matthew effect, and global potentials of a new gallery ranking
This essay discusses functions and structural consequences of quantifying rankings as a rather new phenomenon in the art worlds. Focused on a new list of galleries for contemporary art in France, the text uses sociological findings to reflect on direct reactions towards the ranking and its inventor. Furthermore, this constructivist perspective indicates potential structural outcomes of publicly communicated comparisons in a globalised art world a…
