  • Beyond Indirect Rule

    Open Access•John Agbonifo•ARTICLE•The Journal of Imperial &…•2026

This article re-examines British rule in Benin between 1897 and 1935. It argues that cannot adequately understand the colonial administration through the familiar distinction between direct and indirect rule. Instead, British policy sought to weaken and contain a once-powerful kingdom while preserving selected indigenous institutions under close administrative control. Drawing on archival records, Education Department files, missionary correspond…

  • Fuel subsidy protests in Nigeria

    Open Access•John Agbonifo•ARTICLE•The Extractive Industries and…•2023•References: 4

Attempts to abolish fuel subsidy by successive governments in Nigeria have provoked serious backlash in the form of protests and violence. What maybe said to be the use of such public protests? John Agbonifo•ARTICLE•African Security•2021•References: 14

The world’s most intractable conflicts, with nonstate armed groups (NSAGs) as key actors, have emerged in Africa. The UN seeks to deal with such threats through the increasing use of sanctions. NSAGs often resist sanctions demands, protracting conflicts. What is the role of leadership in the outcome? The sanctions literature has given scant attention to how predominant leaders determine whether NSAGs yield to sanctions. The nexus between leadersh…

  • Environment and Conflict

    John Agbonifo•BOOK•Environment and Conflict•2018

Environmental degradation is a fast-growing problem that not only threatens to erode future development and undermine economic prosperity, but also victimizes and displaces ordinary peoples and communities in some of the most fragile areas of the world. Often grassroots opposition and mobilization is seen through a secular lens, implying that collective action is merely material and provincial. In this book John Agbonifo argues for a decolonizati…

  • Sanctions, Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding

    Open Access•John Agbonifo•ARTICLE•Journal of Peacebuilding &…•2017•References: 15

In pursuit of peace and development, Article 41 of the UN Charter authorises the use of sanctions to deal with any state perceived as a threat to international security and peace. In the post-Cold War era, sanctions rapidly became a tool of choice for conflict prevention and peacebuilding. Non-state armed actors (NSAAs) have increasingly become significant players in the international system as well as a target of the demands of sanctions. Howeve…
