Unintended Pregnancy and the Prospect of Fatherhood – Emotions, Values and Social Expectations in Men’s Experiences
This study examines 10 men’s experiences with unintended pregnancies—an underexplored topic in Norway, where gender equality and involved fatherhood are culturally emphasised. The men were interviewed shortly after learning about the pregnancy and again after a decision was made. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. The findings show that men experience unintended pregnancies with great emotional complexity, prompting reflection …
From Restrictive to Permissive Legislation
In 2020, following years of political debate, the Norwegian parliament passed legislation that eased restrictions on assisted reproductive technologies, including egg donation. This article examines the implications of this legislative shift in a country that had previously been characterised by highly restrictive policies on assisted reproductive technologies. The transition from a restrictive to a more permissive regulatory framework offers a u…

Å gjøre kjønnsbevisst foreldreskap i dagens Norge
Immigrants’ Experiences of Settling in a Rural Community in Norway
This article sets out from two dominant and contradictive narratives about immigrant integration in rural areas in Norway. The first holds that rural areas are “better at integration” as relations in these communities are more tight‐knit and personal. The other holds that integration in rural areas is more difficult due to the homogeneity and closed‐mindedness of rural communities. Based on ethnographic in‐depth interviews with individuals with d…
Personal, peaceful, progressive
Settlement of refugees in rural areas in Norway is part of a national strategy to counter depopulation and thus links to ideas of revitalization and more promising futures for these areas. It also links up to an idea of smaller communities as 'better at integrating', as smaller communities both enable and necessitate more contact between the original population and newcomers. However, although some municipalities reap advantages of the dispersed …
Eggdonasjon
Not integrated at all. Whatsoever’
This study investigates how teachers working with newly arrived adolescent refugee students reflect on these students, their situation within the educational system and in Norwegian society. We research the ways in which these reflections engage with the various understandings of the ubiquitous and ‘fuzzy’ notion of immigrant integration, a concept which we approach critically. The empirical data consists of interviews with teachers in three Adul…
Bioteknologiske framtider
My home is my castle’. The Norwegian home in times of paid migrant domestic labour
The aim of this article is to explore the cultural meanings attached to the home in contemporary Norway, by way of studying the recent and rather contested increase in paid migrant domestic labour. Based on qualitative interviews with Norwegian au pair host parents, the article explores the ways in which this new monetised and globalised organisation of housework and care work influences both the cultural ideal of the Norwegian home and everyday …
Paid Migrant Domestic Labour in a Changing Europe
This book analyses the changing face of work, gender equality and citizenship in Europe. Drawing on in-depth research conducted in nine different countries, it focuses on the discourses, social relati
Paid Migrant Domestic Labour in a Changing Europe
The voices heard and the voices silenced
This article addresses methodological questions concerning recruitment processes in research using qualitative interviews. The authors suggest that, as an active part of the research process, recruitment influences research results in sometimes unforeseen manners. They argue that recruitment processes should be better attended to - not least in research positioned within the epistemological landscapes of knowledge production and transparent refle…
